  • Opinions on people using e-cigarettes?

I smoke sometimes. Pipe or the occasional cigar only, as well as hookah at home. Don't inhale, don't get a nicotine hit, no addiction. I frequently go for a month or more without, if the weather outside is nasty - I only light the hookah when guests want to smoke, as it's a very social activity. I'm in a state where smoking in any place indoors (beyond a private club or home) is banned; when I smoke in public, I'm a courteous smoker. Only in designated areas or when moving, and if I'm in a fully public place I often ask if those nearby mind - if they do, I'll either move, or not light up. It's simple for me.

So... I want to buy one of these nifty e-cigs. Prob'ly gonna pick up a Volcano. I play in a LARP, and an upcoming character would love them, and besides, I think they're cool. I can buy the cartridges without any nicotine, so I'm getting only the taste, which is all I'm after anyway. All that comes out of my mouth is all that goes in: propylene glycol vapor carrying the flavoring oil. These things are basically tiny fog machines, which use the same tech, that is, propylene glycol vaporized by heat. The first e-cigs were marketed widely as "Smoke Anywhere", and that's supposedly the idea for people who use them for the nicotine: you can puff them anywhere and not bother anyone, and still get your nic hit.

My first question is for those who smoke e-cigs. Have you encountered opposition? Do you, as I might, ask places before puffing them? Have you been asked not to, before or after getting permission, or had complaints? What issues, good or bad, have you encountered?

My second is for people who HATE, HATE, HATE smoking and/or smokers. Perhaps you've encountered the rude smokers who don't give a care if you hate their smoke, or maybe you lost a family member to the ill effects of smoking.

E-cigs don't contain any tar or nasty chemicals. Nothing beyond nicotine. While nicotine itself is quite addictive, these are not sold to people who are underaged, though like cigarettes some of them will still get hold of 'em. The firms who market these do claim they're safer in a way, missing the deadly additives, but also caution openly that nicotine is addictive and that these are NOT stop-smoking aids. The vapor coming out has little smell and contains nothing nasty, and it dissipates quickly. Would you still argue against or complain about people smoking these in public places? If so, why?

But... they don't look cool! XD

I've never even heard of these; I had to google them to see what you were talking about. XD Seeing as I'm forgetful on occasion, I'd probably forget the sodding thing if I did buy one, and would have to go get some smokes anyway.

Seeing as their specifically designed to not be obtrusive or harmful in much any way, I don't see any reason whatsoever to complain if someone were using one nearby... though it seems to me that such a thing almost defeats the purpose of smoking in the first place... *shrug* I'm no authority there so we'll just have to wait. *twiddles thumbs in expectation of more smoker opinions*

I first heard of them a year ago...and think they are a great idea. I haven't tried more than a few puffs myself, they are kinda expensive to start out. I'd like to wait until I have some money together before outfitting myself. But I do want to try them. And I think anyone who would even object to these inside or out needs to get an education. There is no SMOKE..only vapor. You can't get sick from these!

I've been curious to try these as well, but I wonder how they're really going to go over. For instance if you're in a bar and you start puffing away on one, I'm sure someone is gonna tell you there's no smoking, and even after you explain what it is, will they just leave you alone or still insist you take it outside?

Which is why, upon entering a place where I'd consider using one, I'd ask first.

I think these are, in a sense, like the Segway. The manufacturers are talking about them as though they're the ultimate replacement for lit cigarettes (which they refer to as "analog" smokes). But they won't be everyone's everyday replacement; many will find them clumsy, or too expensive (though they're cheaper by far in the long run, most people look for what's cheaper right now) or will be afraid that others will poke fun at 'em. But the people who like them will LOVE them.

I have a Segway. And I can attest that they're NOT what the inventor claimed: a replacement for cars and the single transportation device of the future. They're NOT for everyone, every place, every use, and they can look a bit silly. But for those for whom they work, they work great. They, like the e-cigs, have their market, but it isn't the entire market by any stretch.

The UK bans smoking inside in work places. Wonder how it would react to this particular device?

              Interesting.

same thing here.....bans all over. I'm sure "lighting" one up would cause reactions...but again what can they do it's not true smoking.

I'd imagine that the actual language of the law prohibits the inhaling of lit tobacco products or some-such, in which case, this wouldn't count. Doesn't mean people wouldn't try to BS to the contrary as people are want to do

Yep. Considering the tales I hear (this rarely happens to me, but it happens to cig smokers) of people walking over to designated smoking areas and THEN complaining, as though they'd prefer that smokers all die a quick and painful death, makes me want to use one of these and dish out skunky attitude on anyone who makes snide remarks.

A friend of mine has one of those Nicorette things; it's basically a plastic tube that releases nicotine. She can smoke that indoors; it's no different from one of these e ciggies, really, so I wouldn't see the harm.

I've got one of those myself, and it works. I think the meaning with the e-cig is that you experience inhaling and exhaling "smoke", something that the Nicorette inhalator can't do.

The thing is, that an e-cig looks VERY similar to a real cigarette so many people can assume that one's smoking "the real thing".

My mother brought an e-cig with her when she was on a trip to the Caribbeans, I haven't asked her about what reactions she got, but I'll ask her the next time I see her.

I kinda think it would be fun to just "light" one of those up inside somewhere and watch people FREAK out

                            Wha?

The "purpose" of smoking is it is a nicotine delivery system-the e-cigs are also a nicotine delivery system-without the harmful crap(tar, chemicals, etc)

                            How are these different?

And yes I have one-a crown 7-it's long black and very elegant....unscrews and fits in one of my coffin shaped cig cases....

Half or more of the smokers I run into smoke because:

                              A: It looks cool
                              and
B: it makes them a rebel

Maybe I run into a lot of punks *shrug*
