    story here

School in Massachusetts has banned children from biking to school because of the parents concerned about the "danger of all the traffic". What's causing "all the traffic"? These same parents driving their kids to school....*headdesk*

According to the EPA 20-30% of morning traffic is caused by parents driving their kids to school

info from Safe routes to school and EPA report on school travel-including emissions data.

Pay very close attention to the last figure of the first report-a return to the levels of walking/biking to school that we had in 1969 would be equal to taking 250,000 vehicles off the road.

I agree. Think about the amount of gas you could save by biking to school. If the kid is taught correctly then there should be no problems.

Think of the added exercise the kid will be getting as well. I know... I know... Kids? Exercise? How unheard of!

But will the kid be taught correctly? The kid will be too bored in the school led activity, and won't get the lessons at home because mommy and daddy won't teach them.

Unfortanatly this is too common. People decide to have an issue over something dumb and somebody else has to create a solution that doesn't actually fix anything but looks good.

              Absolutely.

I used to be scared using a pedal cycle - I have since done an advanced course (yes there is such a thing) and due to a couple of very simple things (like correct road positioning) I have none of the problems I used to have.

              Really simple!

The thing that is worse than that is that they are allowed to breed uncontrolled.

I just hope that any kids that do ride to school have helmets. It's rather disconcerting how many folk can afford a bike but not a helmet.

It's not that people can't afford the helmets, it just that nobody wants to wear them because they don't feel right/look stupid/make you a dork.

It's stupid, really. But, people are stupid.

Sadly, that story doesn't suprise. People are just stupid, period.
