  • The companies should change

Every once in awhile I see fundraisers to raise money to use to lobby or protest companies to change various habits of their's.

I put forth this idea for discussion. Instead of spending money yelling at them why don't we raise money to help the companies transition to the new policy we wish them to follow.

The changes we want never seem to be cheap yet we complain if companies raise prices to cover the cost of said changes or don't make the changes. We talk about social responsibility for companies but what about social responsibility for us.

We can be objects of change but I say positive change.

Depending on the company, I don't think you'll find much support for your idea.

I wish the oil companies would be more environmentally-friendly, especially in their exploration practices, but the fact remains that they have plenty of money to fund their own environmental safeguards. Big Oil has raked in record profits in recent years. I'm not going to have a bake sale to pay for something they should be doing already.

If a company cannot be profitable while behaving ethically and responsibly, then they shouldn't be in business. We need to set public policy that demands they behave well.

I don't demand bribes to properly dispose of my garbage, pay my taxes, or keep my dog on a leash. It is something that is rightfully expected of me as a citizen, regardless of the costs it may impose on my life.

What about public policy that demands we pay well? We want to picket, protest and demand they do what we want but not by shopping elsewhere but by raising money to smear them. It's not constructive if people want to raise money to bash the company it would be more effective to use that money constructivly.

I am not talking let's get out there and hold bake sales I am saying why don't those people already holding the bake sales act with constructive actions.

I am not saying hand the company the money I am saying take the money and work with the company to implement the changes you yourselves wish to see.
