dressed for...something?

so in the past few years, i've noticed that more and more people are leaving their house in pajamas. i don't know about the rest of you, but when i was growing up, it was not acceptable to leave the house in something we slept in. yet i'm seeing more and more people in stores and restaurants in slippers, flannel pants, bathrobes...
to me, that shows very little self-respect. it says to me that they don't have the desire to make them selves look even remotely respectable.

I was raised with the mindset that showing up to something looking dirty meant disrespect for whomever was hosting etc. This included disrespect for teachers/professors if I did that in an academic setting. If I ever become a professor I'll send students home who show up in my class like that.

GIANT pet peeve with me. I've been flamed plenty for this opinion, but unless you're sick, put on some damn clothes. You may not be lazy or sloppy, but going out in your jammies sure makes you look that way.

You always have to think of the impression you're giving. It's all fine and good to 'not care what other people think', but by the way, we're all thinking you're a lazy bum.

I sleep in a t-shirt and a pair of crop windpants, often times the same shirt and pants that I wear during the day, and I have no problem leaving the house in such attire, depending on where we're going. If we're going to an upscale restaurant I'll usually wear something nicer, but if we're going someplace casual, or out grocery shopping, or just out for a walk, the t-shirt/windpants are very comfortable and, I think, appropriate.

Pajama bottoms and a bathrobe and slippers? That's going a little far for my taste. The stuff I wear is actual clothes outside of sleeping attire, which is why I wear it outside the house. Depending on the PJ pants, I MIGHT wear them someplace really casual...but probably not a bathrobe or slippers.

Actually, this reminds me of when I used to doing interviews at the call center I worked for...I interviewed potential call center agents, and one thing that got asked often is whether there was a dress code or not. My response: "There is really no formal dress code. The only thing management asks is that you don't wear any clothing with offensive images or language on it, and no PJ bottoms." The dress code really is very lax at that call center, to the point that people were coming into work looking like they had literally just rolled out of bed, so we had to make a point of mentioning not to do that...

I honestly wonder if those people think it's acceptable or even "cute" to go out in public wearing their fuzzy bedroom slippers or even worse....some women leave the house with their curlers/rollers still in their hair! Sheesh!

I'll only do things around my home / community in my "PJ's" (usually sweatpants and an old t-shirt). Walk the dogs, run out to the car and get something.

I would almost never go out in my pajamas or overly dirty clothes (unless I was already dirty - like running to Home Depot while doing yard work). I think the only exception here would be during a long term power outage (after a hurricane...).

I looove pj pants. There so comfy. I don't actually wear them to bed though, I sleep nakers. I just like to wear them when it doesn't matter how I'm dressed so I can be comfy. I don' t see what the big deal is. Its about comfort. A robe and slippers would be tacky though

yes as I've seen college girls on the bus going to class(backpack with books)-in bedroom slippers and boxershorts-yop of the boxers rolled down to show off the bellybutton of course....

I was evil to one of them-asked if the reason she didn't have time to get dressed to go out in public was because she was too busy layering on makeup-yes all that I've seen do this have immaculate make up/hair-so it's done to be "cutesey"

It's about being presentable-plus it takes less than 30 seconds to take of pj pants and put on a pair of comfy jeans-are people really that lazy and slovenly?

Slobs and homeless people sleep in their clothes-not changing into clothes and wearing pjs even if you don't sleep in them is to me a hallmark of slob.

if you wouldn't wear a flannel nightgown in public pj pants ARE NOT OK-it's just laziness pure and simple-sorry but a pair of jean is just as comfy(they do make them with flannel linings) and not as likely to be stepped on an pulled off....

I'll tend to take out the garbage in my joggers. That and I tend to have them under my jeans so that I can just take off my jeans and crash asap when I get home.


I use to have a customer, a real old man, that would come into my store in the middle of the night to buy milk wearing nothing but his robe. More then a few times it's come off. More then a few times people screamed as he would wear nothing under it, and just roll his eyes at people that would scream at him for flashing their children.

Whoa. I actually really despise sleeping in PJ bottoms. I don't like wearing long pants to bed, especially if they're fleecy or warm. If it's summertime, I sometimes don't wear any pants to bed. I also absolutely DESPISE women's nightgowns. So, I wear a t-shirt to bed; that is the most comfortable thing for me to sleep in. Usually the same t-shirt I wore during the day (if I wore a t-shirt during the day), because, why not? Why should I put on a different t-shirt just to sleep? This makes me a slob?

When I was in college, I would see this a lot when I had classes at 8:30 in the morning (usually the earliest that the school had classes). It was like they just rolled out of bed, put on a pair of flip flops, and headed to class. It was usually girls, too.

It really wasn't the best way to present themselves, but it never offended me. After all, college is often your last chance to bend society's rules before you finally have to conform and be an adult. As long as they understand that that most likely will not be acceptable in most other places, I don't think it's cause for alarm.

I wouldn't kick out one of my students for wearing PJ pants or sweatpants, but I would say something to one in a robe/fuzzy slippers. I mean, it literally takes 2 minutes to take off one pair of pants and put on another.

And, sorry, but....I like to put on clean underwear at the start of my day. But maybe that's just me.

I don't see why it matters if people are just out doing errands and such. Provided they aren't in a robe and slippers (or well fuzzy slippers, the ballet style ones aren't so bad). There are plenty of PJ pants that don't look like PJ pants. (not saying these are what people wear, but still they are out there)

Also this has been going on since I was in Elementary school at least (so at least like 13 years), so it's not like it's a new thing. I have gone out in PJ pants just for the fun of it with a friend of mine. I see no harm in going to a mall or something in them if you're just going out to have fun with a friend or two. Going to work, interviews, or school (outside of special days) is a bit much though.

Didn't anyone here ever have PJ days at school? Just curious.

I'm guilty of wearing pj bottoms in public. The only time is if I was having a comfy/movie day with the girls and we decided to go get some snacks from the store or if it is during finals week. I wear my bathrobe and slippers around my dorm hall, but would never go out in public with those, not even to take the trash to the dumpster.

While I do think people should put something on other than a bathrobe or underwear, I don't see what's so bad about people going shopping in their PJ's. I wouldn't do it myself, but I wouldn't notice or care if other people did, unless they made it obvious. I mean, if someone feels perfectly comfortable in their PJs why should I bug them about it. It's not like it's affecting me in anyway. I just don't see the big deal here.
