...how are people like this allowed to drive?

just saw on the news. a man was arrested for vehicular man slaughter after he killed an elderly couple. he was on allergy medication and "was blind in one eye and could barely see out of the other."
...my mom and i couldn't stop laughing for a good 10 minutes. i mean, it's horrible that people died because of this but blind in one eye and couldn't see out the other is a line that only happens in books.

Some states do not require a vision test when you renew your license. In fact, I've only had three vision tests in all my time of driving - when I got my first one in NH, when I got my first NJ license, and when I got my first Fl license.

I always renewed by mail or online in NJ and FL - NH never required a new vision test with a renewal.

in ausland, that guy would've been pulled off of the road.

When you sit your Learners test, you're required to have a vision test if it's obvious you have poor eyesight (I had to have one since I wear glasses-thankfully it was free). After that, it's not an issue, but by law, you're required to inform them of your circumstances if they change.

Didn't they pass a law in Ausland to do with Medical practices? The doctors were required to pass on information about failing eyesight, etc that they diagnosed to the licensing centres. That way the license would be automatically changed or reassessed to suit the new disability.
I remember them at least discussing the possibility of making that law.

That is a good idea honestly they could probably do something like that here too. There is a precedent for it health care professionals are required to report when a patient is a danger to themselves or others such as threatening to hurt or other behavior. Not a large jump to health issues.

This wouldn't catch everyone as some people avoid doctors but it could filter out some people that are not safe behind the wheel.

if the person was on allergy medication it sounds like his condition was probably temperary due to a reaction of some sort. Not that it justifies driving in that condition

If that's the case maybe make the ticket more severe due to knowingly endangering lives.
