  • A man can't change diapers?

    I work daycare.

On day one I was given an entire laundry list of things I couldn't do being "part time". One of them included changing diapers. Ok, fair enough. Now, me and all the other "part timers" are being...certified...to change a diaper.

All except one. The guy. I asked my "trainer" why he wasn't part of the group learning, thinking someone forgot to tell him, only to get "Because that's wrong!"

This is a great guy, he loves working with the kids, the kids love playing with him. Why can't he change a diaper again? Its... wrong?

(To add, hes not allowed to do anything aside from the basic WATCH THEM SO THEY DONT KILL ONE ANOTHER thing. Put on sunscreen? no. Take the child to the bathroom? no. Change messy clothes? no. If he can't do anything because hes a guy, why freaking hire him in the first place!??!)

If there's something about this particular guy, then he shouldn't be working there at all. If it's guys in general, then whoever in charge is an idiot

Sounds like a case for the Equal Opportunity board if you have one in your state. If he's there as a token, then the manager is an idiot. Also, I know in Australia, that you need to do a police check if you're working with children of ANY age (if you're under 18 and you're doing a program through your school for work experience, you're covered by the school). Might be something to raise with management if it's not already legal?
Not saying the guy's a pervert, but if that's the reason why the centre won't let him do anything involving direct contact with the children....

Hes the only guy working there, so I couldn't tell you.

Hes gotta be at least 20, if not older. I've seen him on campus in passing over the years I've been there, so its not an age thing...

To him, its just one less thing he has to do but have you ever tried telling a screaming three year old "No, I can't take you to the bathroom, let me find someone else"?

The assumption tends to be that women are fine around boys and girls but men, all men, are nothing more then rapists who will rape at the very first opportunity. He probably isn't allowed to do any of those things because he will obviously rape the first kid he takes to the bathroom or puts sunscreen on.

Sadly that is probably the reason

It completely ignores the fact that women can be child abusers. There was actually a very publicised case about a female pedophile at a nursery a while ago.

I'm wondering...is it not compulsory to pass a police check by the state/country before you even set foot in a daycare centre as a worker?
I know that as far as Australia goes, all teachers, teaching students (this doesn't include students on work experience-most of those programs are a week or so) and anyone who works with children on a regular basis (i.e. social work, youth work, tutors, LAP assistants etc.) are all required to have police checks. Some schools/groups will pay for the police check, others require the person to do it themselves.

Heck, even my mum was required to do a police check when she works with my sister's Gang Show (Scout/Guide variety performance...basically songs and small skits with a central theme). Due to the sheer number of girls and guys, and there are different characters/costumes for different songs, they divide them into "troops". My mum runs one of the girl's departments. ALL of the backstage/technical crew were required to have police checks and do a mandatory reporting course.

For the place I'm working at we had to do background checks and fingerprinting to start working there... I assume that's a state-wide requirement, perhaps even nation wide.

The problem is that not all child molesters are caught by the police or reported and not all pedophiles act on their desires.

It's still BS that just because the guy in the OP is in fact a guy, he isn't allowed to do the job he is there for. My mother worked at childcare centers for years and a part of the job is to help the children who are potty training, change diapers on those who are not, put on sunscreen, hold their hands, pick them up and remove them from areas that they shouldn't be in, etc.
"It's after Jeopardy, so it is my bed time."- Me when someone made a joke about how "old" I am.

I find it ridiculous that they have all this screening crap in place to deal with children if you're not a parent....but any YUTZ can give birth and no one cares. And I think it's bullshit that they aren't letting a guy change diapers. When my kids were babies you can bet your ass the man changed diapers along with me.

In some places you can't even go near a playground unless you have a kid with you, because all single adults are pervs, dontcha know?

The situation described in the OP is just plain stupid- if the guy can't do so many of the routine tasks associated with child minding, then why the hell did they hire him?

Because if they didn't, he could yell discrimination?

Well, the first half of that is a problem anyway; I don't see any way pedophiles NOT acting on their desires could be considered a bad thing. Regardless, the assumption that every man is one is downright insulting.

I'm surprised the guy in the OP already hasn't.
