It is, after all, assault. Is it not usual for police to arrest people for assault when they witness it?

That's my interpretation of the law.

I bet if you were a school worker who had to deal with clean up, wasted food, and angry parents you would think differantly.

My son's school had 16 students hauled off for a food fight at school.

Considering what they did...I think it was the right thing to do.

They were throwing full and UNOPENED bottles of Gatorade. So that's people getting beaned in the head with a 2 pound (32oz) weight.

There are food fights, but that's a bit much. Personally I'd love to know who tossed the bottle at my son's head. If I could point to one and KNOW that they did it, I'd have that kid up on a Civil Suit for the 8 stitches in my boy's head.

            Your comment:

Oh for..... really? A food fight is worth arresting people over now? This has to be one of the biggest wastes of police in the history of police.
The police have had to enforce more petty laws in the past, and you're saying this is a waste of time? Besides, the officer was there, it's not like someone called 911...he saw a crime committed and acted on it. More cops should be like this.

And who is panicing over a food fight? Are you guys serving rocks for lunch?

Good lord. All I can say is you fail. Congrats on giving kids a criminal record over a food fight
All I can say is, whoever's supporting the kids needs to know that getting hit with flying food (among other things) can be harmful, and that, not matter what, it is assault as well as disturbing the peace. Y'know, illegal.

I agree it depends on the type of food fight if your talking bottles and possible injuries then yeah arrest them.

if your talking gushy food then meh it was all silly fun.

But then you have to take into account food allergies that people could have.
What if someone threw a peanut butter sandwich at someone who was highly allergic to peanuts?

I'm allergic to tomatos, get a nasty rash if it the juice touches my skin. If someone threw a tomato at me I would be incredibly pissed off and would want to beat the bugger bloody.

If the person knows of the allergy and it kills you then it should be treated like killing someone on purpose.

If they don't know and it kills you then it should be treated as killing someone by accident.

If they know and targeted you then assault charges should be brought against them.

If they didn't know or didn't target you and it was an accident that they hit you then it should be a civil matter.

Thus why I never get involved in projectile fights of any sort. There's too many risks involved. A food fight may seem innocent and just good fun, but like any sort of fight, there is always the possibility of injury or even death.

Ignoring the possibilty of injury there is also the loss of food and the cost of clean up. Its the same as vandalism.

Whose food? Most food fights I ever saw in school were done with food that the students bought meaning it was the students food to throw the only loss of food is that they if they want to eat now have to buy more food.

I understand your point about the vandalism though.

Some school have food that is out, like a salad bar or free food to low income families. Also you assume people throwing food around like animals won't just grab more food they haven't bought yet.

Either way, vandalism is bad and wasting food, any food, is downright wrong. My folks didn't mind when I helped the ball team TP somebody's house or when my senior class went on a shoe polish spree in the high school parking lot (windows only, of course). But my dad said to never ever egg something because that's wasting food.

Egg also takes paint off of stuff.
