  • to dob or not to dob

Lets say Hypothetically you knew of a person who was screwing the system. They were getting some form of welfare but, in your opinion, didn't need/deserve it.

Why? Because the idea of welfare is that you need help paying rent/buying food and so on and you ARE NOT WORKING.

So say you know this hypothetical person, who is working a cash in hand job, has a family member(s) who are paying for their rent and giving them extra money for food. So the money they get from welfare is going towards toys and so on...things they WANT not NEED.

NOW a few things to throw in the mix...you used to be close to this person, they still mean a lot to you, you are still close to the family, you know this person might figure it out that it was you and "come after you" either legally or physically.

    What would you do??

    I'd report them.

How would they find out it was you?

Personally I would report them. Because people that abuse the system make it hard for those who have a legitimate need.

I'd report them, I've seen too many people screwing the system and get away with it.

I'd report them secretly so that said person would not come after me.

              Report it.

Chances are though, nothing will happen. I've reported dozens of the assholes that have entire families with their own welfare cards each, even little jimmy so he can buy his fifty dollars worth of junk food before school everyday. Same with the people that buy cases of beer and cartons of cigs on their welfare card.

              Nothing happens. At all.

Even worst when I even have it on tape of them withdrawing money from their welfare card at the atm, handing it to their buddy, who then gives them a big wad of crack.

              Welfare stands for

Whatever Evil Loves For Asshole Richer Everywhere.

              Or something.

Point is: Welfare is for two people. The ones that need it the most, which gets very small amounts and are followed everywhere, make one mistake and the system cuts it off for abuse, or those that blantally abuse it, and get more money for it.

Report them. Also, as an officer, it's kind of my duty.

This is the reason people with legitimate needs get so harped on by the conservative base.

I have to agree with Plaidman on that. I made one little mistake with my housing benefit, and it took me ages to get it back on track cuz the council of course came down heavy on me. All I did was not inform every single section of the council that I'd moved. Whereas the scroungers who happily defraud the system are allowed to go on doing so.

Report it. With any public program this is a common form of abuse, grants or welfare.

Money given by the government to go towards a certain thing that never makes it there. What really sucks is they are probably going to get utility assistance as well, unless someone also pays that for them, which means that when some person about to get their utilities shut off who desperately needs the help will be told there isn't enough money.

Don't think of it as screwing them over think of it as helping save someone else that needs the help.

I would leave them be. It isn't your business. It is up to the government to figure out if somebody os defrauding the system. What if you report them and they get cut off and it turns out you were wrong and now they have no money?

Yeah and what if your the witness that someone killed someone and your wrong and they go to jail.

He is talking he knows for a fact the situation not he saw someone and thought, "Hmm their clothes are too nice they must be defrauding the system.

And I am curious when the government and everything related to the government, especially those things funded by our tax dollars, stopped being our business?

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing.
                            Both quotes - Edmund Burke.

The fact is, it IS our business when it's our taxes that go to keep the welfare system running. If someone is abusing said system, then they basically are stealing money from both the government and ourselves; last time I checked, theft was a crime.

Problem is this "person" IS doing this, I've seen it, They have admitted it and even had the hyde to bitch when they got a cut in "thier pay" then going and buying a rather expensive phone that they can't afford.

However, I did forget to mention, that this "person" would then become an even greater burden on their family financially. They are already very damaging emotionally to the family and to anyone that has ever been close to them. Sorry I'm giving this story bit by bit, but I didn't want the other information to make people blind to the real question. Which is, would you dob. Seems the majority of people would.
