I live on the middle level apartment. I accept the fact that I'm going to hear the people above me. I chose to live on the middle floor. I could've easily have requested a top floor but I took what they had available. The only time I would have an issue is if my neighbors were going out of their way to make a lot of noise but I never had any issues with them. I don't think I have neighbors below me but I do try to be quiet when I'm walking around but I'm not going to live in fear that I might accidentally make a little noise.

I had the opposite problem.
when Ex and I still lived in <bigcity> we had a first floor apt. apparently the people on the 3d floor just though we were loud.
we once had the cops called on us (as we found out later) in the "middle of the night" for having a "loud party". now at the time I was working in a corp office and NEVER stayed up that late (as I had to be in to work at 7am with an hour train ride) . apprently the cops stopped by and heard the supposed "loud party" (ok we did get a little loud every now and then in the romatic dept) and just laughed and went away. we did NOT know we had a police complaint until a week later when we were out in the parking lot and one of the cops saw us exiting our apt and made a rather startled comment along the lines of "SHE'S (meaning the Ex) the one that was LOUD???". The 3d floor tenents were out there also.
embarassed the 3d floor people esp the wife as she was the one who complained. I guess she was not in the mood that night and hubby was.I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.
I got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the Twilight Zone.

Last apartment I was in I was the top apartment. My sister who lived below me got irritated with me moving out because her new neighbors are loud.
One problem with being a top floor there is that the heating units were in the ceiling which meant that if the person below me turned their heat on it was also coming up through my floorboards.
That being said no it is not my responsibility nor theirs to alter their normal habits to make me comfortable.
Also if you yourself are a the kind of person that throws loud daily parties then you have 0 right to complain the one night a neighbor's party is still loud at 10:05.Jack Faire

Basement apartments are usually much cheaper than comparable apartments on the main level. That's because they're dimmer and noisier.
But that's the cost of saving a hundred bucks or so a month in rent. There's really no point in complaining about it. Basement dwellers are getting what they paid for.

We have a middle apartment; the one above us has been a revolving door of weird. Section 8, underage parties, etc...the current tenants have two small children. At night and in the morning (7 AM on a Sunday?) it generally sounds like they're training elephants up there, and somebody plays LOUD music on Saturdays; we're fairly certain that's the apartment in question. I brought my bo out of storage just so we have something to bang on the ceiling with (they tend to quiet down for an hour or so, then start up again).
The apartment below us can hear them at times; she also has two small kids, and they've been woken up before. The elderly woman living next to us can hear them, and the couple next to the elephants can definitely hear them.Last edited by Dreamstalker; 06-13-2010, 02:54 PM."Any state, any entity, any ideology which fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

All I have to say is, everytime I hear these horror stories about people's apartments, I am so grateful for my apartment and my amazing landlord. Yes, it's a bit more expensive to live in this 4-plex than a lot of the complexes in town, but it's worth every penny. I live upstairs, but the floor is thick enough that the downstairs neighbors don't really hear me - at least, they've never complained. There's a stairway in the middle of the building, so I don't share a wall with my other neighbors. It's great.

I'm really looking forward to next year when I will seek out somewhere else to live. I hear the high efficiency types of apartments are very solid, so you don't hear every footstep or toilet flush or closet door open.
It may cost more, but I may just have to live in a brand new type of apartment if it means some peace and fucking quiet.

I have accepted living in an apartment is like living too close to all kinds of people, and working nights, I've accepted that normal people aren't going to stop their daily routine so I can sleep. I've accepted lawn mowers, leaf blowers, hearing people being up and awake while I'm trying to sleep.
What I will not accept is people who demand quiet from me after a certain time, when they make no effort to not stomp their feet or slam doors or make truly un-necessary noises. There is no reason to stomp up and down the stairs or slam doors. And a person can open and close their closets without rattling them open and shut so hard it sounds like they will fall off their tracks.
As far as my neighbor and his surround sound goes...that is just stupid any time of day or night. You live in an apartment building, you do not crank it so loud that it sounds like it's thundering. It's one thing if the building is so old and poorly built that it can't be helped if the TV is heard at normal levels, that happens all the time here, but if you buy yourself a home theater system and crank it up, people are going to be upset.

I can't figure out how I slept through the Blue Angels and their practice runs two Thursdays/Fridays ago, but I get woken up every time I hear a door slam or someone stomping up and down the stairs or across the porch or every time a cupboard slams.
