    Would noise-cancelling headphones work?

what about if you need to set your alarm for something? Wouldn't earplugs or headphones keep you from waking up?

It all seems silly in general to need ear plugs to sleep just because your neighbors are assholes. I can see if your SO snores or your pet is in heat, but not because you work nights and your neighbors don't care to be quiet about opening and shutting doors and walking up and down the stairs.

I slept through the Blue Angels military jets during their practice runs, I can sleep through most storms (save for the ones with really loud thunder) and I sleep the best when it's pouring rain. I can sleep through jackhammers and lawnmowers and snow blowers and everything BUT those loud pounding and thumping noises.

Earplugs have saved my (admittedly limited) sanity.

My ex fiance snored, and his mom suggested them one day - they were an absolute godsend. We have since split, but since my son walks like an elephant and is right above me, I've kept using them.

As long as my alarm clock is set on it's loudest honk, I can still hear it with the plugs in.

I seriously don't know how I lived so long without them. My ex husband snored and I just put up with it for years.

As for neighbors, I rent the 2nd and 3rd floor of a two family. My 1st floor neighbor is pretty cool, but she's a little OCD. I like her alot, so I try to go out of my way not to do the little weird things that annoy her.

I guess it really depends on the neighbors...if my downstairs neighbor was a bitch with her OCD, I'd just basically say f-ck her, but since we get along we work together to alleviate each others weird quirks.

Normal noises don't really bother me much when I'm ready to sleep. In fact, I sleep best with some kind of background noise to block everything else out. Otherwise, I keep popping awake because it's too quiet.

When I worked graveyard shift, I practically died when I went to bed. When I was single, I frequently fell asleep with the TV running. I'd just set the sleep timer when I felt sleepy, and drift off.

Now that I'm married, my wife does not want a TV in the bedroom. She bought me a sound spa machine as a compromise. Sometimes, depending on my mood, I'll take my mp3 player to bed and listen to it until I fall asleep.

My grandparents lived in apartments for years. In one, they had a lot of bad neighbors. We never did figure out what the ones directly above were doing, but we assumed they bounced basketballs; all day, on and on and on, we'd hear a pair of footsteps meandering all over, trailed just ahead by a constant and sharp *THUMP*THUMP*THUMP*THUMP*. If they WERE bouncing a basketball, the person doing it was walking loops around the apartment for an hour at a time doing it. They also hired an awful babysitter on many afternoons, who spent all afternoon talking on the phone on the patio. Though I only saw it happen once (and from inside, so I didn't directly see HER do it) she'd change the baby, tape up the diaper and toss it off the balcony...where there was a playground. On any given evening, there were three or four neatly-packaged 'bombs' littering the gravel.

One of my current friends lives in the only apartments she can afford which, unfortunately, have a zero-tolerance noise policy. Meaning what? Right now, it's about 100 degrees all day, and they have no AC. When they go to bed, they used a ceiling fan. USED. Because their upstairs neighbor has complained to management - once - that it vibrated and kept her awake. And after one complaint, management came in to remove the fan. They managed to talk the guy out of forcing them to remove it on the spot, but on the caveat that they never use it again. Zero tolerance, one complaint and that's it. They don't want to complain to any overseeing agency, because they won't be able to afford anywhere else if this gets them tossed out, and even if the building is forced to let them back in, there's nowhere they can stay in the meantime. Nor any way to move out, and possibly back in, an apartment's worth of stuff, from a 12th floor apartment. So they're SOL.

They were probably asked to remove the fan not just because of the noise, but because tenants are usually not permitted to install fixtures in rental units. That's not a minor piece of decor such as a mirror. They would have had to run wires.

No wonder their landlord wanted it down immediately. He's liable if they fucked something up electrically in the building.

Besides, you can get large floor fans that do the same job.

I lived in apartments that had built in ceiling fans in bedrooms when I moved in. I doubt Skunkle's friend tried to put one in themselves. Their neighbor is just a dick and the managment is bigger dicks.

I can't completely rule out the possibility that they're just dicks, but it seems odd that management would ask the tenants to remove something that they had not installed themselves.

Skunkle's post implied that management didn't put the ceiling fans in the apartments themselves. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I can't hear any of my neighbor's ceiling fans. If the fan were really that bad, that had to have been a building so old or poorly built that the walls were made of paper.

And mine is so poorly built I can hear my neighbor's toilets flushing. But not the fans. So I will go with the notion that the neighbor was just being a freak.
