  • *followup* world's oldest mother dying 18 months after giving birth

    story here

Her body can't recover from the IVF treatment, pregnancy and the c-section-doctor says "she was old her life expectancy was only 5-6 years anyway, but hey she shed the stigma of never having children" This after he revealed that a 66 year-old woman just had triplets at his clinic.

the photos of the mother and child are quite sad just a warning...

"After nearly 54 years of marriage they were desperate to have a child so took out loans to pay for the £2,000 IVF treatment."

Psh, banks continuing to give out loans to those who obviously won't be able to pay them back. What a surprise.

As long as doctors actually admit the real reason dying, maybe some good will come out of this (no one stupid enough to try it again).

Well, pregnancy and birth are a tremendous strain on a woman's body; even a young woman. So this is sad, but not really surprising. This is exactly why people are against sixty plus women getting pregnant; the risks are greater towards the mother due to her age, and after all, it's the child who's going to suffer. This poor little girl is left motherless thru no fault of her own, at an age where she needs her mother.

What disturbs me is that from what these women say it sounds like they only care about the part where they give birth while not at all worrying about being around to actually raise the kids.

Being a mother means raising your children not just giving birth to them.

These women are also living in India, Jack. It's a completely different culture. Children aren't raised by their parents and ONLY their parents. Relatives are usually very involved in children's lives. Not just grandparent and aunts and uncles, either. Also cousins, brothers, sisters, friends, neigbours.

I'm not going to jump to the conclusion that this woman's daughter has been "orphaned".

Wasn't the conclusion I was reaching at all actually. I was actually only remarking they seem to labor under the impression that breeding makes you a parent.

Even if the whole culture supports that line of thought I still feel the line of thought is wrong and disturbing.

It's like here where many people have the thought, "if you don't have a college degree then you wasted your life."

That I agree with wholeheartedly. The idea that a woman is a failure if she doesn't breed is disgusting.

Also, I couldn't help but notice the husband saying something like, "I took two other wives and they didn't give me kids either" which seems to suggest that it was him who was firing blanks, not his wife who was barren. -.-

Being that the child is a girl, I'm not so sure that she'll be valued at all by her father, who probably wanted a son. -.-

While it sucks that she died I still support her choice to go through with the treatment. Age shouldn't be a restriction for what a person can do with their life

I could maybe accept this comment if this situation were only about the woman's life. But it's not. It's about her child's life as well, a child who is going to grow up most of her life without her mother.

Besides, it's one thing to decide to do something like go back to school or get a new job when you're that age. But this kind of treatment was completely unnatural. No woman at her age would be able to give birth naturally. I don't think it's okay for doctors to play god and bend the rules of nature this far.

If given the choice between not having a mother and not existing which one would you choose?

Well, if you didn't exist, then the question would be pretty much moot.

Depends if that kid knows that their birth cost the life of said mother the answer they choose may be the latter.

Then they will have the choice to end their own life

They can't choose, they don't exist yet. If they had a magic time machine with which they could alter the event in question it's entirely probably that many would choose their mother's life over their own.
