The problem with magazines like Maxim is that they will never have "Top 100 Totally Awesome Women", it will always be "Top 100 Hot Women". There is just one portrayal of women, over and over again--as objects to leer at. Magazines that acknowledge women as people are not marketed to men. They are "women's magazines". Isn't this at least a little bothersome? Maybe?

        I second Hobbs statement.

It's only natural that a magazine all about the great accomplishments of a given group is going to be marketed to people in that group. Sex is the outlier, where the majority of interested persons are crossovers (i.e. Male -> Female and Female -> Male)

It's only to be expected that a publication touting one group to the exclusion of all others is going to alienate everyone else. If a publication all about successful women doesn't market well with men, how is that Maxim's problem?

Thing is, most of the publications that feature successful women on any sort of regular basis aren't really marketed to women, either. They're marketed to people in general. Women's magazines are generally about how you should look and act in order to get the guy. Which, to me, sends the message that a woman is not worth much unless she has a man.
