I have some issues with employment laws governing termination. One main one: if terminated, tell the employee WHY they were terminated. There should also be a simple way to dispute the termination as well.

Exactly. Don't pussyfoot around with "you've made mistakes/you're not cut out for X". Say exactly what happened and when...maybe the employee didn't really have anything to do with it. If local/state laws require writeups prior to termination, do it or the firing can't stick.

I found out the hard way that part-time workers here aren't eligible for unemployment.

Also, if a former employer is giving bad references (which isn't kosher, but some do it anyway) you have the right to know who's doing it and what they're saying (and to who, so you're given a chance to head it off). I suspect Game Store guy is screwing my chances for retail jobs, but have no way to prove it beyond what he told the job coach about my "not able to handle the demands of customer service".

Exactly, if they were at least required to explain why you were fired, than it would be fair. Sure, they could probably come up with some BS explaination when the real reason is "We don't like your face", but it would be a step in the right direction.

I live in an at will state and work in an at will state. They could decide they don't like that I am gay fire me call it a layoff and let me have unemployment but the effect would be the same.
