Do Shows Like Family Guy and South Park Sometimes Go Too Far

Only Family Guy episode I ever bothered to remember was "Road to Rhode Island." I do recall enjoying the first South Park episode, "Scott Tennerman Must Die," and the Halloween episode with KoЯn.

Then again, I also own three volumes worth of Beavis and Butt-head, so I think my oppinion's moot.

I want to kick the the ass of these people because these are almost always people who hated reading growing up watched all the trashiest TV then went to college and became "cultured" while I spent my childhood reading everything I could get my hands on and watching educational TV.

Then I went to college and discovered the joys of trashy TV.

Don't get me started on those types. Just because something is original doesn't mean it's good. There's a reason some movies follow a formula, and that's because the formula works. Ah I need to start another thread on this.

But an original plot is a good thing and gains points on that alone.

I love Family Guy and South Park because they aren't afraid to push the envelope. I might sit in horror at some things at first, but then I do see the humor and just laugh my butt off.

While South Park does present political and social issues, they present them with scatological humor. Family Guy makes fun of everything and everyone, so nothing is left alone. The creators and writers have real cajones to do and say what they do and say on their shows.

BTW, the creators of South Park are the nicest guys ever. My high school business teacher told me how one of her son's friends had the opportunity to work with them on the show when they first started out, but his family didn't approve. The friend's sister wanted to go to medical school, but couldn't afford it. Trey wrote out a blank check and paid all of her medical school expenses.

The more "intellectual" my daytime pursuits, the trashier my choice of television and movies (and to some extent, books).

The only time I ever watched soap operas was when I was in university. A group of us would get together and watch Days of Our Lives. Women AND men. It was a wonderful break from using our brains.

Since I graduated, and started working retail, I'm back to watching "artsy" stuff. I need the stimulation.

My husband, on the other hand, challenges his mind every day. His job requires a great deal of critical thinking. So he watches a lot of sports.

I'm also one who watches a wide variety of TV. I find the "trashy" shows, as some of you have called them, oddly therapeutic if I've been dealing with customer sucktitude at work.

My favorite is sci-fi/fantasy -- Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, etc. So, if I find any of these shows, I watch them no matter how many times I've seen them before.

Then comes the stuff like The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, etc. I've also come to be a big fan of Scrubs -- Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso are my favorites with their caustic personalities.

If I can't find anything from either of those categories, I check out Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Food Network, The Weather Channel, or HGTV.

I also like a lot of the older sitcoms on TVLand, TBS, WGN, etc., and one-hour dramas, especially CSI.

I usually start my school/work day routine with watching The Weather Channel or one of the news channels while sipping my morning coffee and trying to get motivated enough to care.

When I have free time, I'll opt for a movie on one of the movie channels, or rent one if I can't find something interesting.

What I never watch of my own free will are sports, reality shows, or talk shows like Jerry Springer. That's the point at which I turn off the TV.

I love both shows; never been offended by any of the themes. Nope, not even the Terry one; the brother can say what he likes, but she wasn't actually alive at that point cuz her brain was liquid. So, she wasn't feeling any pain when the plug was pulled. Anyhow, I love South Park. I remember watching the first ever episode and just rocking with laughter. It started out as mostly toilet humour and cheap shots and ended up being this really clever satire that poked fun and took shots at everyone and everything. Remember the Tom Cruise episode? No-one escapes.

I don't mind when they do really offensive things. Its up to them to do them... If they make fun of something I find highly important, I can still find it funny. If its a funny joke.

What I'm trying to say is that they don't cross the line, because I don't believe in the line. I believe in funny, and unfunny.





And those shows are quite lowbrow. But they can be smart too. I like low-brow stuff though. Like wrestling. Err... Not Raw/Smackdown/NXT/TNA stuff though. >_> That just sucks these days. Used to be good. But that's a story for another time.
