  • Ban on high-powered cars for P-Platers

    http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/s...-1225886885470

Basically, P-Platers (which is sort of a middle ground between learners permit and full licence, you can drive on your own, but the fastest you can go is 100km/h even if you're on a road with a 110km/h speed limit, you can't drink or do drugs AT ALL while driving, you can't get any more than 3 demerit points and you have to hold it for two years.) are now being told what cars they can and can't drive in an effort to clamp down on "hooning."

My opinion? while good, I REALLY wish they'd go and just flat out crush them while forcing the driver to watch. (and the owner if it isn't the driver's car)

What makes this one funny? Well, read the list of cars they aren't allowed to drive:

    http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/s...-1225886887758

The list includes the following: Aston Martins, Audis (quite a few models), Mercedes Benz (a few models), ALL Porsches after 1994 (wtf?), Ferrari's, Lamborghinis, Maserati, Rolls Royce, Chrysler (OK, that one's understandable as I do not see a lot of small model Chryslers on the road) as well as quite a few cars that are understandably banned but are more the type that young P-Platers are actually going to BUY.

No offence to those who do own those particular makes of cars, but the Astons, mercedes, Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce cars all fall under the category of "substitute penismobiles" for me. (Ferrari and Lamborghinis tend to fall under that category to an extent-you don't see them much in Ausland)

Obviously done only to make people think the politician is doing something to help young people since driving ten miles below the speed limit is more dangerous then driving the speed limit. They care about scoring political points not safety

hence my comment. I would much rather see the car get crushed, but that's just me being vindictive. Especially if it falls into the category of "mummy and daddy's car"and/or "substitute penis."

What's this substitute penis crap? It's 1:40am so I'm going to be blunt. Is it because they are actually nice cars and if you want to drive around in a nice car, it's obviously because you HAVE to have an emotional boost? God forbid someone actually likes a car because of how it looks or how much horsepower it puts out instead of using it to pick up girls.

I don't really get what's wrong with the list. I know people who got Jags for their 16th birthday. I know people who got BMWs or Mercedes Benz. So it's not like kids don't have access to these cars. And to be honest, new drivers have ZERO business driving around in a performance vehicle like a Porsche Carrera GT, Aston Martins, Audis, etc. New drivers don't know dick about how to handle those kinds of cars if they've only been driving for a very short period of time.

Not really, one, it's 10km, which is about 6 miles, it's not more dangerous when you consider that they're experience on the road can be counted in tens of hours, most of them don't have the skills to be driving that fast and the majority of roads that have a seppd limit of 110 have 2 or more lanes either way, so there's no danger driving below the speed limit.

Which is the main reason that they're banning new drivers from driving them.

Somewhat off topic, but I'm pretty sure 'Lamborghini' is an Italian word which translates in English to 'Compensating.'

So, newer drivers aren't allowed to drive pickups (that's a Ute, correct)?

Don't let Chicago politicians see this, or this will be the next list coming to Illinois. Fucking Nanny State.

To be blunt, a lot of times, yes.
Yes, a lot of people do buy cars because they like the style, or they like the handling, or whatever... however, most of the time it is a status symble. You don't know how many of my mom's clients have admitted to her that they have no interest in cars, they just bought one because one of their neighbors had a new car, so they just had to buy a new car too (my mom likes to say that her clients have a lot more dollars than sense).

                  Q. Isn't slower always safer?
                  A. No, federal and state studies have consistently shown that the drivers most likely to get into accidents in traffic are those traveling significantly below the average speed. According to research, those driving 10 mph slower than the prevailing speed are more likely to be involved in an accident. That means that if the average speed on an interstate is 70 mph, the person traveling at 60 mph is more likely to be involved in an accident than someone going 70 or even 80 mph.

This is Australia, not the US, we have less cars on the road, and frankly, I've seen how people drive in the US compared to Australia.

Also on that vein, how often are trucks involved in accidents because they're going slower than the other cars on the road?

So, newer drivers aren't allowed to drive pickups (that's a Ute, correct)?
Yes a pickup is a ute and it would depend on the type, although it looks like most v8's are out.

Hm, I learned to drive in a V8 pickup (Dad's farm truck), and my first vehicle was a V6 pickup. I can see what the list is trying to get but, honestly, if a parent is dumb enough to buy a 16 year old a new Porsche for them to wreck, so be it.

The compensation vehicles around here tend to be the really big, really tricked out trucks, Hummers, and other SUVs. Taking up the road, not parking correctly, and don't forget the vroomvroomVROOOOOOMMMMM. Maybe they wouldn't be called "penile compensation devices" if the people driving them didn't act like dicks.

Yeah, you don't see Masarati or Porsches around here. A few Mercedes and BMWs, but very rarely. Lexuses are about as fancy as this podunk backwoods part of Wisconsin gets. And like Admin, our status symbols are enormous trucks and SUVS.

I never saw the point in new drivers getting brand new cars period. I learned in shit cars, because of money issues I still have a shit car, but besides the point, it's not smart to give inexperienced drivers sports cars or powerful trucks.

Some of those car types I can understand, as a few in the listings are supercars or at the very least have some severely powerful engines that can get away on them.

Others though (like the Rolls) seem to be on the list to save the cars from the inevitable damage the inexperienced driver will do to them.

The problem is drivers not expecting a person to be driving signifigantly slower then they are and they don't notice until it is too late.

True. You can get pulled over for going slower than traffic. The ticket is named "Disrupting Traffic".
