  • Not attending Parent/Teachers Conf. --- go directly to jail

    http://www.parentdish.com/2010/07/08...d-mean-jail%2F

while I see this being a good thing in some small way --- there are too many instances of 2 job parents, parents who could care less, absent parents, wild childern who could care less, etc.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

I can see both sides of this one, too. Maybe jail is a harsh fine, but it also might put a strain on parents who think that the entire point of their kid going to school is for the school to teach them everything and do 100% of the parenting for them. And yes, the kid might not care what the parents say, but if the parent tries to lay down the law, at least they're making an effort on their end.

I say it's doomed to failure. As has been said before, you can't force people to give a shit about stuff. All this is going to do is further enrage the people who already have an issue with law enforcement.

This is a horrible idea and a fine example of the schools being given too much power. Since when were parent teacher conferences manditory anyway?

And while I understand this is Detroit, in other words, a wasteland, I never like the idea of truancy laws in the first place.

that's just it...2 job parents...ones with jobs we can't just walk away from for a school conference. Maybe they need to be more flexible about scheduling these things...in the evening perhaps when a parent might have time?

Amen! Employers aren't always understanding when it comes to this stuff. My mother was fortunate to have such understanding employers that let her go early so she could make the conferences, but other students' parents weren't as lucky.

All of my conferences have been in the evening, but not everyone works the typical 9-5 job. Some work 3pm-11pm or other shifts.

My mom almost never went to my parent/teacher conferences. I got nearly all A's and B's. I never got in trouble. What exactly would my mom really need to go for?

Unfortunately, this is probably coming to pass as a result of the problem kid's parents. The teachers need to speak to them and can't get in touch.

                  I completely agree.

Just because my parents never went to teacher conferences doesn't mean that they didn't care about me or my education. I never got anything less than an A the entire time I was in school, and never had any disciplinary issues. What is there to discuss, exactly?

So, it's a horrible thing to not be around your children. And to punish you for this, we're going to... make you not be around for your children for 3 days.

I think that the people behind this is trying to get more parents involved. I doubt it will be made official. I hate to say this but I hope something similar to this would be passed. What it would entail I don't know but a parent cannot expect the school to raise there kids. The kids are at school to learn reading, writing, math, etc but after the school day ends they go home. The school is not there to raise children, that is the job of the parents. The purpose of the ordnance is to force parents to take responsibility for their kids. It sucks that ordinances/laws like this are even being considered.

I think the people behind this idea are well-intentioned, but their idea for punishment is beyond stupid. Also, I live near Detroit. Why should I, or anyone else in this state, have to pay for your upkeep because you dodged a Parent-Teacher conference. And the jails around here are overcrowded now. Everyone says so in America. Why, then, is the only solution to nearly every problem to stuff more people in there?

Sounds like a good idea. We need to get parents involeved with their kids. I highly doubt anybody works every day all day, so it shouldn't be an issue to figure out some kind of meeting time.

Tell that to the single parent with 2 or 3 jobs just trying to get by and provide the best they can for their kids.

Unless they work three 8 hours shifts every single day they should be able to find a small amount of time to talk to a teacher
