The case is over. He went to trial, pled guilty, and was convicted. When he herd the sentence, he fled.

So, to put it bluntly, What she thinks in this matter equates to FUCK ALL!

the statute of limitations only determines how long after a crime a case can be brought to trial. since this case has already been brought to trial, and he's been convicted, it doesn't apply.

even if you take his separate crime (flight to avoid punishment), as long as he continues to evade american authorities the crime is considered to be actively occurring. statute of limitations also doesn't apply to crimes actively occurring, so any way you look at it, he can't wriggle out by claiming the statute of limitations has lapsed.

as for dragging this on, polanski is the only one responsible for that. if he'd just accepted his punishment and done his time when he was convicted, most likely he would have been long out of prison and moved on with his life by now.

Actually I believe he never did hear the full sentence. The only "crime" here now is his fleeing which was dumb...he should have just stuck around and gotten it over with. He probably wouldn't have done much jail time if any and it would have long been over by now. He probably should just give it up and turn himself in here and get it over with. Then he can go back to what he does best which is make films.

How does the fact that he fled a sentencing negate the original crime? And fleeing is a crime. I hope you're never picked for jury duty, thinking it's ok for criminals to escape.

As it was stated before the case is closed. He's in trouble now, and has been for the last several decades, for fleeing the country. And I didn't say he should escape I said he should have stuck it out and gotten his sentence and gotten it over with.

In fact, the case is not closed until punishment has been given out to the guilty party. He has fled such punitive measures. As such, should he be returned to the US, Polanski should serve his original sentence, along with his new sentence of fleeing (5 years max) consecutively.

Probably. What I don't know is whether or not he will do that. Or if he will just stay in exile since he's not in his seventies...who knows.

Do you feel like that for all people? What if they say, murdered your entire family, was caught, tried, found guilty, but escaped and ran to another country. Do you shrug and go oh well, if they are caught again a few years later? A decade later? At what point do you think criminmals that did something should no longer serve the time they were suppose to do, just because they were in exile a long time. That isn't justice. That's just letting assholes do what they want, simply because they got away. It's like a giant sign "If you do crime, but go away for a couple of years its perfectly fine! Because hey, it was a long time ago. I'm sure you learned your lesson by being free and not being punished!"

Pssst, Hobbs...*Hint* - I'm pretty sure that was meant as a joke.
                              Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?
