Hadley Jons was on a jury dealing with a resisting arrest trial. Jons logged onto FB and even before hearing the defendant's case, announced they were going to have fun telling the defendant they were guilty.

Hadley Jons was removed from the jury after the FB post was discovered by the social stalking son of the defense attorney.

It's not social stalking, it's "research".

Pretty sure that should be a crime though to talk about a case. Especially if it seems like you are rigging it like this guy did.

Yeah, that is DEFINITELY grounds for someone being kicked off the jury. While I usually don't want anyone going through Facebook-y personal stuff, if someone says that, then they shouldn't be on a jury. After all, this is still the United States, and the trial wasn't even over.

How about the defense attorney son checking out facebook pages? Is this the going to the fashion of the future for jury trials? Trolling FB and MySpace and other networking pages (that may pop up in the future) to see if the jurors are/are not talking about the trial in cyberspace?

MadMike - I never really thought of that! There are people out there who will do anything to get out of jury duty, isn't there?

Can she get jail time or contempt of court or something because of this?

One of the criteria of jury duty is that you don't discuss the case with others. That includes people you live with, so it certainly rules out posting about it on Facebook.

And it's the job of lawyers to gather any information that improves the case for their client. Getting an idiot thrown off a jury would be in the best interest of anyone, especially an idiot who is obviously biased against them.

Part of not discussing a trial while on jury duty means that you don't post about it on Facebook. An ex of mine was actually stupid enough to ask the bailif in the hallway of the courtroom about what would happen if they didn't reach a verdict, and naturally, he got called into the judge's chambers, and I think he got kicked off the jury. Let's just say that it's one of the many reasons why I broke up with him and that I'm glad he's an ex-boyfriend.

Wow. That is an impressive amout of fail in such a short post.

I don't agree with the notion that defense attorneys are scum...at worst, they are a necessary evil. After all, everyone has the right to a fair trial, and defense attorneys are part of that. Especially public defenders.

However, I'd also do anything to get out of jury duty. Sorry, I'm in school, and I teach. I do not have time to take a few weeks off. Not only would that completely fuck up my own education, but it would leave my prof and other TA's scrambling to cover my classes. Hell no.

Admin, do you go to school in the same state in which you'd have to do jury duty in? I received jury duty and said I couldn't do it since I was out of state for college. That was a couple years ago and I haven't heard anything since.

But what this girl did was illegal and I'm pretty sure it qualifies for contempt of court which is jail time. I'm not sure how jail time will help anyone get back to work.

I'm registered to vote here now...so I'm not sure. "I'm in college" is usually a good enough excuse to get out of jury duty though.

In New Jersey, it's not a good enough excuse. But since I was out of state, I think that may have changed things. That and I told them I didn't have transportation back to Jersey at the time...

I actually had a professor who considered jury duty a great privilege. I don't know what to think about that.
