Edwards can't be suspended or fined by the team due to the contract the league has with the Player's Union. However, once the commissioner Roger Goodell has a chance to meet with him and go over everything, he can fine and/or suspend him for violating the league's "image" policies. IIRC, there is a player currently suspended 4 games for being arrested on a DUI charge.

The team did what they could and said he would play, but not start, due to "being out late" and breaking the team's curfew policy.

I believe you are talking about Vincent Jackson?

      That wasn't his first DUI.

Wait... Is there somewhere where you get 20 years for drunk driving?

As far as I'm concerned, football players are employed in order to play football. If they do something like drunk driving, that's between them and the legal officials of the state they drunk drove in. We're playing them to throw balls around, not be role models.

What irks me about the whole thing is the team chooses to bench him for the first quarter for being out late. However, they do nothing to the two teammates that were in the car with him. Wouldn't they be out late too?

It's almost as if they threw something out there to try and keep the media off their backs while they wait for the NFL and the Courts to make their respective decisions.

Hm, they probably won't get punished because they didn't commit a crime. They've both stated they had no idea Edwards was drunk at all. They both said he seemed perfectly normal.
