  • Miniature Collie Attacked By Pit Bull In Arlington

    http://www.wpxi.com/news/25150409/detail.html

man was walking his collie one evening and an unleased APBT charged at the dog.

Collie was injured and the vet bill is $2400... the owner of the pit bull offered to "help" pay the bill.

fuck that. he should pay the whole thing. it wouldn't have happened if he had kept his pit bull leashed properly.

I agree completely, if you are gonna take your dog for a walk put a damn leash on it. The pitbulls owner should pay the whole bill himself, screw "helping to pay" fork over the whole thing asshole.

I agree with the owner of the Pitt Bull needs to foot the entire bill for the Collie.

However, I can already predict what is going to happen with this case. Because the dog is a Pitt Bull, it will be deemed "aggressive" and "unsafe" and will be put down. If it was any other dog, there would be no such outcry.

      To quote the Collie's owner
"I don’t feel safe walking him anymore as long as that dog is alive."
      And the reporter
Charges against the owners include harboring a dangerous dog.

I see nothing in that article that says the pit bull was being walked.

I do know that dogs sometimes rush out when a door is opened.
I do know that dogs can "slip their leash" when tied out.
I do know that even a proper leash can be yanked out of an owner's hands.

do you keep your dog(if you have one) leashed 24/7? Even in the house, if not then if your dog rushes out of the front door someday and attacks another dog-oops you didn't have it "leashed properly" did you?

and the owner of the collie "losing his balance" sounds like his dog lunged at the APBT, which would defend itself. Sorry the story is too one sided for me to form an opinion as to if the pit bull's owner should pay the entire bill.

I have witnessed at a dog park several "toy breeds*" ganging up on and attacking an APBT-biting and barking, when the pit tried to defend itself(by barking and growling-never once bit or attempted to) the owners of said "toy breeds" started screaming at the pit's owner saying how could he let such a "vicious dog" attack their tiny dogs.

I have heard of a dog going through a window to get at the teenagers that threw rocks at it daily-would that be the dog's/owner's fault as well?

you can also lose our balance if your dog runs away in fear

and i don't automatically hate any dog or breed. i believe there are no bad dogs - just bad owners.

and ... if the pit bull owner had trouble keeping the dog in, then he should have done something to fix it. the question is, in my opinion... whether or not he was prepared to truly handle his dog.

of course the collie could ahve been attacking the big dog... since even small dogs will try to protect their humans from threats

Well I tend to agree with you that it's a case of the species being a factor in the rulings in general, in this particular instance, I have to disagree. That dog is aggressive and unsafe. Not because of it's species, but because of what it's done. The courts won't take a chance on another attack occurring while an attempt to train it is made.

Do I think all Pitt Bulls are a danger? No. Same goes for Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Cocker spaniels(the one I had was a big baby),etc. But this dog is a danger and if someone handed me the leash saying he's been trained after the incident, I'd be inclined to refuse and leave as quickly as I can safely do so.

All dogs, no matter the species or the size, are territorial. The same can be said for cats and other animals.

What the article does not say is how far the Pitt Bull was before it "charged" the Collie. Were they in the front yard of the Pitt Bull's house, were they across the street, or was the Pitt Bull out and about on its own away from where they lived.

What was the Collie's owner doing that caused him to lose his balance and fall? Was the Collie barking at the Pitt and trying to get at it?

Too many unanswered questions here, but none of them matter because this is an American Pitt Bull Terrier. It might as well be a black man trying to eat in a white diner in 1950s Birmingham.
