She says her only crime was initially reporting to police she did not know who had jumped and cut her on the way to school.

Welcome to the wonderful world of plea-bargains.....because the prisons are so crowded due to mandatory drug-sentencing laws(yes they only apply to drugs-you get a good judge/DA/lawyer you could theoretically get probation for murder.), the actual violent offenders get probation. Heck we had a case here in madison recently where an 18 year-old committed murder for a pair of shoes and a cell phone....but his previous crimes at age 13 for raping women at gunpoint....yup probation.
