  • Someone PLEASE remind me of what year and century it is NSFW

I heard this story on CBC's As It Happens program this evening (Friday Oct. 15, 2010)

from the hallowed halls of YALE University a fraternaty that STILL DOES NOT GET that it is the 21st century.

Just in from the "What-Year-Is-This?" Department - Ivy League Division. And a warning: this is not a story for young or tender ears.

It's about a group of wanna-be frat boys at Yale University. They were performing a series of tasks in an effort to win entry to one of the most prestigious fraternities on campus, Delta Kappa Epsilon (or DKE). One of those tasks was to chant misogynist slogans across Yale's Old Campus -- which is home to almost all of the new female students on campus.

There was a meeting today between members of DKE and some Yale women, and attended by two deans.

Hannah Zeavin attended that meeting. She's the managing editor of Broad Recognition, a feminist magazine on campus. We reached her earlier today in New Haven, Connecticut. And again, a warning: some of the language in this interview is disturbing.

    http://www.broadrecognition.com/yale...9s-old-campus/

this incident the gist of the 2 articles is contained in this quote

Begin*ning around 9:30 pm, members of the DKE (Delta Kappa Epsilon) fraternity marched with their pledges around Yale’s Old Campus (the home of almost all of Yale’s fresh*man women (add: this is important)) chant*ing slo*gans such as “No means yes, yes means anal” and “My name is Jack, I’m a necrophil*iac, I f— dead women, and fill them with my semen.”
these types of pledge "activities" apparently have been an on-going problem at Yale as refernced by this article from Sept 2009
    http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/20...gets-freshmen/

so in the end I assume that Yale (since it seems to have NOT performed a proper investigation or handed out sever disciplinary actions) still considers (after 40 years the last holdout of the "Ivy" league schools to admit women) women to be non entities. engrained culture dies slowly does it not???

the campus WOmens Center has tried to deal with this sort of "behavior" in the past but to little effect. AIH had an interview with the Head of the Campus Womens Center. she stated that a "meeting" took place with representatives of DKE, seveal Admin Deans and the Womens Center. the DKE's "apologized" but she feels the "apology" was just a cover and not really all that scincere.

the funny thing is is if these statements were to have been directed at Black or Latino students, the outrage would have been deafening.

it seems that the Yale administration is just taking the incident as

(from one of the comments of the last article)
I can understand Dean Miller's hesitation to make any official statement yet, but I echo BR 2010. Don’t treat this incident lightly. Don’t slap wrists and pardon with a boys-will-be-boys, this-is-only-a-joke attitude. Don’t call sexual harassment by another name.
a couple athletic recruits and fratboys here have an incredibly undeserved notion that by being at Yale they are entitled to be inhumanly obnoxious and often sexist. not saying they're all like this, but mob psych. is powerful in teams/in frats.

my feeling is is that the President of the local DKE chapter AND the Rush chairman should be expelled (yes it will absolutly ruin their lives and yes they deserve this), the local chapter of the fraterity should be disbanded or banned and or at the very least kicked off campus or severly restricted in its activities

    ditto
I've never understood frat's as we don't have them over here, I just see them in animal house and college based movies and they always come across as arseholes
If thats what the current members want the new recurits to say then it was their idea and they should face the consequences regardless of how much daddy is paying in fees

The notion of Frats and Sororities is completely outdated, and yes, the chapter should be immediately disbanded and barred from ever re-opening on campus.

        *facepalm*

Even saying anything directly pertaining to this would require killing several brain cells.

^ITA. If these boys (and that's what they are- overgrown boys, not men by any means) had gone around chanting slogans offensive to blacks, latinos, jews, or just about anyone else, there would have been hell to pay. It would not have been written off as "boys being boys".

But do what amounts to sexual harrassment and intimidation to women, and suddenly, it's just a big old joke? Hell no!
I know that had I been there, I would not have wanted to venture outside while those man-boys were walking around chanting that mysogynist stuff, at least not without heavy weaponry. Why? I don't think I would have felt safe. After all, if they think nothing of invading my space screaming slogans that trivialize rape (no means yes) and otherwise demean women, then how am I to know that somebody might not try to cross the line and get physical, groping, touching, or worse?

And there are people who believe women have achieved complete equality and feminism is outdated and unnecessary. Apparently not at Ivy League schools.

This is slightly OT, but as some already know, I work at a small career college. We offer diplomas and associates' degrees, and we are working on getting bachelor's degree programs. Nothing like this would ever happen at this school, nor would it be tolerated for one second if someone did try to pull this crap. Yet, we are constantly having to defend ourselves as being a "real college." Maybe we aren't as backward as the "real colleges" like to think we are.

I'm guessing that frat's hazing doesn't include forced sodomy.

Or heck, maybe it does, and that's where the "No means Yes, Yes means Anal" comes from.

If not, they should try it. See how much flipping fun it is to be raped.

Excuse me while I kill something.

And the rest of the time I have to set their pants on fire myself. On that note, does anyone know where I can get matches that don't go out when you throw them?

Damn I'm glad community college doesn't have frats, everyone just does their work and shoves off to the next thing... it's so... efficient. And it's quieter, less obnoxious and doesn't smell nearly as much. The college in question may want to move in this direction...

Yes, it's true, even at smaller colleges like mine. Fraternities and sororities get away with doing so much. When the Alliance did Day of Silence, they were able to disrupt us and call us names. Even though we said something, they weren't even given a slap on the wrist. At our Homecoming variety show, they can be disruptive and scream and shout, but if any other person were to do that, they would be escorted out and given a lecture.

Here, they say hazing is not permissible, but one sorority did and got caught, but they just couldn't do Spring Rush recruitment. That was it. They really didn't have to pay for the hell they put those girls through.

again with the stupidity this time in Canada (possibly NSFW)

here is another example of a DKE chapter at the Univ of Alberta Edmonton behaving badly.

some of the the stories contain vivid grossness and video thereof of what pledges were REQUIRED/forced to do.

******* You have been warned these stories contain vivid gross stuff*****

HMMMMMM seems like the frat boys wanted to join the Army and run a Abu-Grave (sp) type prision

this story and the fraternity are now receiving internationl attention and scrunity
