In the article, it said that the mother of said child was incarcerated. Seems like to me, the "Grandmother" was tired of watching the baby, and wanted to make a quick buck.
I feel sorry for the baby.
Not sure what the mother is in jail for, but I bet when she asked her mother to watch over her grandchild, her own flesh & blood, she wasn't thinking her mother would sell her baby!
Gah .... That's just ... sick.
Daily Mail has an article about it

Imagine what the conversation between grandma and Mom would be that after the mother got out of jail.
Mom ::“I’m out of jail. Where’s my little guy? Mommy what’s to give her little guy a big hug. ::noticing lack of child:: Hey grandma where’s the baby?
Grandma ::“Well a funny thing happened last week, but on a brighter note we haven’t had to change a dipper since and I’ve got all theses collectors plates of Elvis.”

^No kidding. Poor baby. Although I suppose maybe whoever she sold him to might have taken better care of him, not like Grandma was doing a stellar job."And I won't say "Woe is me"/As I disappear into the sea/'Cause I'm in good company/As we're all going together"

But she needed that new Chevy Malibu. I mean, it's a Chevy Malibu, a must have when it comes to cars. (no offense meant to anyone who owns one)

I think if she was tired of taking care of the baby she could have tracked down the father, not tried to sell the baby. Of course the baby would have probably been in better hands had it been sold to a couple desperate for a child as opposed to a grandmother who would sell it, but the mother probably wasn't in on this plot and would have been very distraught when she found out about it.

I'd say the biological daughter that was given up for adoption 27 years ago got lucky to get out of the upbringing her younger sister got. She's the one that originally alerted police, by the way, as grandma had first offered the baby to her upon hearing she wanted one of her own.
I strongly suspect that if there are not other, closer relatives, the first daughter might end up with the child anyway.
