  • Owner of closing shop blames customers...

..And i guess it has nothing to do with the fact the a carton of eggs was $8 or steak was $28 a pound (according to the article). What assholes.

“Don Otto’s Market wants to say we had few customers that understood customer loyalty and its importance to our business,” a message on its Web site reads, later adding: “If you came in only for baguettes, the occasional piece of cheese, the occasional dinner . . . you can not tell yourself you were a supporter of our market.”
WTF? Who does he think he is? With prices as high as he set them, he's lucky he even got those who came in for a piece of cheese. Blame the economy, not the customers who probably can't afford your crap.

I'd be *very* interested in hearing Mr. Scallion's views on this...

The article sounds like he's saying, "I opened a shop, I'm entitled to make a living. You customer guys are cheating me!" With a heavy hint of "BAAAAAWW!"
"So, my little Zillians... Have your fun, as long as I let you have fun... but don't forget who is the boss!"

by buying something that wasn’t exactly what you want, it gets you closer to what you want. It’s an investment.”
Is it just me, or does that statement not even begin to make sense?

Yeah, either he slept through economics, marketing, and accounting class, or else I did.

Now I can't stop thinking about it! Like... if you buy what he has in stock now, then he can afford to stock better things in the future, maybe? That's the best I can figure.

Or maybe it's just one of those 'zen' riddles meant to clear your head.

No! Got it! He's off his meds.

Sounds like one of those zen riddles to me. Like you may not think you want it, but once you get it, you'll realize you wanted it all along. Still doesn't make much sense, but neither did anything else the owner said.

Unfortunately, you're always going to have people like this. They all think that their prices are golden, and that customers will kiss their ass. $8 for a carton of eggs? Sorry, not happening. Instead, I'll hit up the supermarket, and take advantage of every one of their sales.

sadly "organic, free-range eggs"(this was a "totally organic store")-that is close to what people pay here. It comes with free smug though. And that's about it-organic farming is worse for the environment(they can use pesticides, but they are 10x more toxic than the synthetics used today-and more applications are needed for the same effectiveness), produces much smaller yields per acre, and has been scientifically proven to be no different at any level than conventionally produced food.

I've actually had that discussion with the food snob in my office. She's constantly going on about what I choose to eat. But, pigs with fly out of my ass before I'll spend $8 on eggs. They taste exactly the same as the cheap ones at Giant Eagle, plus there's no health benefit at all. But, what do I know...I don't spend all my time reading men's health magazines. Instead, I get my health advice from my mother...who works for the county health department as a supervisor

well just let her know that the most commonly used on organic produce "natural" pesticide has an LD50* of 60mg/kg while the newest synthetic pesticide has an LD50 of 425mg/kg. Or that the most commonly used "organic" pesticide is oil-yup that's great for the planet.

Totally organic store, he must have been smoking some "totally organic weed" when he set the prices.

Of course it was the customers' faults. See, he had the products that people only sort of wanted at a price that few wanted, and therefore it was their fault.

Heh. Some people don't deserve to be in business. He no longer is.
