Breastfeeding mothers are to be allowed to take paid breaks to feed their babies, firms are to provide fridges and private rooms.

Why take babies to work? O_o Surely it isn't the right atmosphere. Also, it might make employers discriminate against hiring women. Finally, what about the other workers? Are they to be discriminated against in favour of breastfeeding women? The childfree already get a raw deal in some places compared to people with kids.

People who chose not to have kids have long been discriminated against. First picks of holidays off, excuses to miss work whenever they want, etc. This comes as no surprise.

I just don't see why you would be bring a newborn to work. Does England not have maternity leave?

they do and now fathers will be able to share in the paid leave-according to the article it's 39 weeks paid and 13 weeks unpaid.

If a woman would be allowed to return to work and bring her child-the company wouldn't be required to pay two people for one job(the one on leave, and the temp doing the work of the one on leave)

I for one would have loved to be able to return to work after the birth of my child. However he was allergic to anything but breastmilk, I couldn't pump(many women cannot), and he wouldn't take a bottle. So my skills went unused.

Sure do; this is extra. I really don't see why it's necessary; if a woman wants to continually breastfeed her child, then she should work part time or stay home. I'd hate to share a workplace with someone doing this; either it's a screaming baby giving me a headache, or a mother popping off for a few hours to feed her child and me left doing all her work. -.-

Agreed, not only is it distracting but it slows down the work process. Or as hard as it is, find someone to help raise your child and on breaks find a private place to pump. I say this from experience. I helped my friend by watching her son monday through friday and she did her best to find time to pump during her breaks in private and there would always be enough left at home. She had permission from her boss to use the lesser used break room downstairs and have privacy as long as she let her team know she was going on break etc.

Yes not everyone can do this I know, but can schedules not be changed for a while or some leeway given to avoid having to bring your child to work or are 6 weeks (or three months or whatever amount of time) of maternity leave not enough to figure something out.

I'm wondering why some women wouldn't use a breast pump if they wanted to work full time. From what I've heard on CS.com, some people (like monolayth) don't have a problem taking their breast pump to work and then taking a couple of breaks to pump.

If and when I ever have kids, I'm planning on doing just that...taking off maternity leave (it's 18 weeks paid and up to 52 weeks unpaid subject to criteria in Ausland) and then pumping when I get back.

I think employees should get paid for doing actual work. Your employer didn't force you to have a child.

easy-not all women can pump*-I got a whopping two ounces one time-and less after that-I tried 5 different pumps, hand expressing, nursing on one side while pumping on the other-nothing worked.

In any case, having a child is a choice... your choice. Not your employer's. Not your co-workers'. Why should they end up having to cover your work while you go off and feed baby?

Also, I'm wondering what happens to the baby in between feeds, does it get stuffed in a locker or put in a filing cabinet? O_o

Seriously, a workplace is no place for a baby unless you work in a daycare or nursery.

I think it's unfair to pretty much the entire rest of the workforce to force a company to put in so much extra stuff to favor the few women who can't be parted from their jobs long enough to properly bond with their babies.

I sometimes wonder how people find the time, money, and resources to have and raise kids. Don't get me wrong. I know people do it. Heck, every time I go into a public place, there are at least several people toting small children around. I just can't help but find myself wondering how it is all done without one of the parents staying home or working part-time.
