  • Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

They were caught kissing (pictures taken and published) and now Ms. Gomez has gotten death threats from Bieber fans

At least one tweet read that if she breaks his heart, she'll have to die. Another one tweeted that they hate her and will kill her if she's really Justin Bieber's girlfriend.

    WTF?

Can't the young man just have a girlfriend without anyone threatening the object of affection?

What is wrong with these "fans"? I hope nothing happens to Mr. Bieber nor to Ms. Gomez. Just let them date!

    Sheesh!

To be honest, there's probably a few things wrong with Bieber fans. For one, they're Bieber fans to begin with...

Seriously, when did being a teen heartthrob go from 'receiving hundred of marriage proposals a week' to 'attracting every single yandere fangirl under the age of 25'? It's more than a little disturbing to me to know just how obsessed teenage fans can be. Imagine the reaction if they not only were dating but engaged on top of that.

I wonder though, Zed, how much of this obsession is "normal", and how much it can be attributed to the instant info/communication era we live in?

In other words, if the Interwebs, and everything associated with it had been around 50+ years ago, would teen girls of the era be doing same thing in regards to Elvis? Or, 45 or so years ago, with the Beatles? "If she breaks Paul's heart, I'll KILL her!!"

I suppose, either way, there would still be differences with the generations, and their values and behaviors, whether the 'net existed back then, or nothing like it existed today.

I suspect at least a part of this is the manner in which Bieber became famous in the first place.

This really sums up my feelings. Really not much left to say other than that.

I'd like to think it's just teenage girls being.....well, retarded and having angst and crushes on male celebs.

Although celebrities of both genders and all ages are big targets for stalkers. Many celebs have been stalked, some to the point of nearly being attacked or have been attacked.

They should be like I was at their age and have major obsessive crushes on defunct fictional characters. No new drama to deal with
"So, my little Zillians... Have your fun, as long as I let you have fun... but don't forget who is the boss!"

I'm humiliated at the idea of who I used to crush on as a tween/teen.

Me too, Blas. Without giving too much away, had there been internets when I was 12, there would likely have been a post made by me that was very similar. "You better be good to *cheesy teen heartthrob*, or I'll rip your spleen out!" Haha I was crazy then, too.

I am sure Ms. Gomez will be fine. Bieber, on the other hand ...

I had a crush on fictional characters too. But I'm a furry. :P

Anyway. I think part of the problem is people on the internet don't have an appropriateness censor.

This is nothing new and isn't just teenage girls guilty of this. Just yesterday, a 27 year old friend of mine was telling me about how she wants to get this "Classless skank" fired because she's dating one of her best friends at work and someone she used to hook up with before she got married to someone else. She has NEVER met this other girl. She knows nothing about her. But she hates her with the same voracity as these people here.

I don't know why I clicked on this topic, but anyhoo...

I can't understand why a fan would be so stupid as to think that they actually own someone else, someone who doesn't even know that they exist. I've never understood why fans get upset when a celebrity starts dating someone else. It's not like you had a chance when they were single!

It's because they just know that when he sings his songs, they're the ones the song is about or being sung to. There is a very fine line between infatuation and obsession and a lot of people cross it all of the time. Yes it's mostly teenage girls, but there have been people of all ages and genders guilty of it. Hell, even celebrities themselves are guilty of it.
