Well, I just hope that Selena Gomez is safe. Hell, just surviving the Disney corporation is enough of a feat without the fear of being taken out by rabid fans.

Also, I really don't understand the absolute and utter hatred that the internet has of Justin Bieber. Yes, I think the music is horrible, but I'm not the intended audience. I bet pretty much every teenager has listened to and loved a "horrible" band, for me it was Spice Girls and Hanson*. And Savage Garden. 13 year olds aren't supposed to have good taste in music. Like most mega pop stars, Bieber will fade away in a few years if given the opportunity.

But the boy does need a haircut

*They could have been considered a legitimate band if not for some epic mishandling. Some of their current music is quite good.

In my day it was NKOTB that the girls were obsessed with.

It comes down to conformity. People are cool if they like the cool things. Stereotypical girls like the celebrities, stereotypical guys like the sports teams.

Most people think Bieber is a girl when they hear him sing. That's a large part of the flack he gets. You just may have heard one of his songs.

I only knew of that song due to Todd in the shadows from thatguywiththeglasses.com, I had heard snippets before, but that was walking from my bit to somewhere else and back again so not really paying attention, then only a couple of times after and only when it got to the repetative part.

I could watch another Todd video that has a Bieber collaberation, but I want to keep my ear drums unsullied, I think I still have some of Rolf Harris' sperm in my ears after he orgasamed during his cover of Lou Reed's walk on the wild side.

Back in the 1990s, when the European band Take That announced that it was breaking up, so many teenage girls in the UK threatened suicide over it that the government had to set up suicide hotlines to deal with them. Well, maybe that's not worded well. I guess they didn't "have" to, but the government felt it necessary to do so.

Like others have said, every generation of teen girls has some kind of musical heartthrob. In the 1960s, the guys from The Beatles did this. When I was in high school, (late 1990s), it was The Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, Ricky Martin, N'Sync, and some others that I can't think of. Nowadays, it's Justin Bieber. He'll probably fizzle out in a few years and shortly thereafter, you'll hear radio DJs daying, "Gee, I wonder whatever happened to that kid" as they play one of his old hits.

The only teenage heartthrob I can think of who has enjoyed sustained fame is Justin Timberlake. Considering that, I guess there is some hope for Bieber.

Given that I was a rabid Nsync fan, I'm glad I was never one of those girls that would go around going "I'm gonna marry Justin!" and blah blah blah. Though I was known in a couple of forums for making the "older" crowd of fans blush with the details of what I would do if I were to ever get Joey Fatone in a room alone. Haha. But I knew what reality was and that was never gonna happen, and it was ok.

Looking back, my first teen crush was Richey Edwards. Now I see where I was going wrong! I should have crushed on Take That like everyone else!

My youngest had a crush on the boy in question now not so much. I don't remember who my two oldest daughters were "in" to but I do remember them begging to camp out for tickets.
I'm showing my age here but I remember some of my older cousins freaking out over the Beattles in the mid-60's. One of my sisters was all hung up over the the Bay City Rollers and Davy Jones. Personally I think it's foolish to get so emotionally invested in such things.
