  • I wasn't sure where to post this....

It really belongs over on CS, but I don't have an account over there, and really wanted to see what you guys thought. Here is the OP from a football message board I frequent:

NFT: I think I got a deli manager fired today
    NYGinNC : 9:10 pm
Before I begin this story, I should point out that I DON'T normally enjoy getting people fired or in trouble at work. I also believe that everyone is human and makes mistakes, and you shouldn't try to get someone in trouble for making an honest mistake while trying to do their job (unless it's egregious).

My problem, both in live service environments and telephone customer service, is where I'm treated dishonestly or disrespectfully. If you work in a service job, you need to attempt to do your job, and you need to refrain from giving me an attitude or "punishing" me by flaunting your momentary power. If you try to use your job to fuck with me, I will be the asshole who comes back and tells everything to your boss.

Most service issues I have dealt with over my lifetime tend to be different versions of the same few things. However, occasionally I am surprised with something new. That happened today.

It started off rather typical. In the middle of December, I went to a deli that I had been frequenting, and ordered a pastrami sandwich (plain) and a turkey sandwich with no mayo. It was about 15 minutes before they closed, and I took it to go. I came home to find that the turkey sandwich was covered in mayo (a friend threw it in the garbage for me), and the pastrami sandwich was extremely fatty. I realize that pastrami is sometimes fatty, but this was excessive and shouldn't have been served that way. I had ordered it from the same place several times before, and it was always fine.

I tried to call into the place to complain, but they were closed. It was also Friday, so I couldn't reach a manager until Monday.

When I reached the manager, he gave me a surprising answer. I still had the receipt and offered to bring it in. He wanted to see the food that was messed up! I explained that I wasn't going to hold inedible sandwiches for 3 days just so I can bring them in to show him, and that I attempted to call right after discovering the problem, but they had been closed. He reluctantly said, "Well, okay...umm.. I can replace one sandwich."

    WHAT THE HECK?

I wasn't asking for a refund. I just wanted both sandwiches replaced. I could even prove that I had ordered many times from them in the past without incident, as the people at the counter recognized me already. He still wouldn't budge. He claimed he wasn't authorized to give me more than one sandwich.

I couldn't imagine that the general manager of the entire store (which is a small chain) wouldn't be authorized to do such a thing! He claimed he had to check with the district manager. I found that ridiculous, but gave him a chance. He never called me back, so I called him again about 6 hours later. He said that he hadn't checked yet, but would be meeting with the general manager at 6pm and would bring it up. LOL. But okay, fine. The rest of the day passed with no phone call. Finally, the NEXT evening, he called me up and said the district manager authorized replacing both sandwiches. Hallelujah! He rattled off his hours and told me to come in anytime to get them. He never said that it wouldn't be able to be done if he wasn't there.

I then had to go to another secret location for a few weeks, so I couldn't come back in until today.

I visited the place, and asked for the manager. He wasn't in, and had left no note about my situation. I asked if they could call him, and the nice girl up front did exactly that. She reached him, and I was all ready to get my replacement sandwiches.

    But no.

    He refused on the phone.

    Did he forget me?

    Nope.

    Did he change his mind?

    No.

Did he not believe I was the same guy?

No, he believed me just fine.

Why couldn't I have my two sandwiches?

Because he wasn't physically there to fill out the paperwork for it.

Not joking. The general manager of the store claimed he couldn't authorize his employee over the phone to give me 2 sandwiches without ringing them up.

The girl noticeably felt bad for me, and gave me the phone to try to talk some sense into the guy.

He refused. He told me to come back another day when he's there.

I asked why he couldn't just fill out the paperwork tomorrow when he comes in, and he told me some bullshit about how this wasn't allowed.

At this point, I was pissed, and told him that if I left the store without the sandwiches, I would never come back, and that he'd lose my business forever.

    He was fine with that.

I then told him I would contact the district manager, let him know why my frequent business was lost forever, and mail the district manager my receipts from the competition every week for the next year.

Like a teenage punk, he responded, "Are you threatening me?"

When I explained that I wasn't threatening but merely was going to explain to his boss why my business was lost forever, the guy hung up on me.

I was standing there on the store's phone and got hung up on by their own manager. It was surreal.

The girl at the register said, "You know what? I'll make the sandwiches for you anyway."

And she did. Sweet of her to defy her moronic boss like this. She also got me the district manager's phone #. I told her that I would put in a good word for her.

I left a message for the district manager, who called me back almost instantly. This was like 15 minutes after the whole mess occurred.

The district manager and I had a very interesting conversation. Among the things that came out:

    - The district manager had been out of town at another location for the past 3-4 weeks. The store manager's claim that he was meeting with him that day was a lie.

    - The district manager had never been contacted about the 2-sandwich matter. This was the first time he heard of it.

    - The store manager absolutely had the authority to give me the 2 sandwiches without checking with anyone in the first place.

    - The store manager absolutely had the authority to give telephone permission to the girl behind the counter to make the sandwiches for free, even if he wasn't there. Indeed, the correct course of action was exactly what I suggested -- give it to me now, fill out the paperwork later.

    - The store cost $1 million to set up, and has been failing at that location for its entire 2-year existence. It is the only store failing in the company.

    - The district manager said that my report was eye-opening, and that "it explains a lot about why we're having problems at that location. It looks like we have a customer service issue."

    - The district manager revealed that the store manager gets paid "more than you would ever imagine", and that it was "unbelievable" that he treated me like that given his high salary and authority granted to make decisions himself.

I got the strong impression that this manager is going to lose his cushy job.

Good job denying me those sandwiches. Hope it was worth it. What do you guys think?
Note: NFT stands for Non Football Topic.

Anyway, I am going to link the thread so you can see the reaction, but if you would, give me your reaction before you read the thread over there.

    Thanks.

I was sorta playing Devil's Advocate up until the OP called the DM. I mean, maybe the company really did have some stupid, draconic rules about comping customers and how comps had to be done, and the store manager really was just trying to stay within those boundaries. I still don't blame the OP for calling the DM, even if all of that was true. And after the conversation with the DM, it sounds like the store manager completely deserves to lose his job. Okay, maybe he doesn't deserve to lose his job after one single incident of (completely unacceptable) poor customer service, but if his location is failing anyway, he at the very least deserves to be scrutinized and put under some kind of probation until they figure out what else he's done.

*goes to read some of the responses in the link*

Okay, I can get where some people might think he went overboard in writing up the story the way he did...but hell, I've been on CS for over 2 years now (and I lurked for a while before that) so I guess I'm used to it. I like a good story and this one was pretty well written so I didn't see a problem with it. I also don't see a problem with him waiting the whole weekend to contact the SM about the situation. I mean, what else is he supposed to do, aside from just write the whole thing off, which he obviously didn't want to do? I'm sure that if the OP had been able to do all this the same day he ordered the sandwiches, no one would be bitching about it. But because he had to wait a weekend, he's suddenly making a mountain out of a mole hill? And he went about everything the "right" way. He didn't yell and scream and make ridiculous accusations or demands. He didn't request a refund/replacement for no reason. He ordered two sandwiches, one was not what he asked for and one was not satisfactory, so he calmly and politely asked to be comped. When the SM, whose job is (at least partly) to take care of unsatisfied customers, refused to take care of him, he took the next step and went to the next person in the management hierarchy, again without really going SC. He could have left out the "I'm going to take my business elsewhere" card, but even that's not as bad in this situation as it is in most others we hear about.

Really, I don't see that the OP did anything wrong. Kudos for being a good customer and not turning SC. And there are plenty of people out there who would love to have that SM's job and be a whole lot better at it, if he does end up getting fired.

...and you need to refrain from giving me an attitude or "punishing" me by flaunting your momentary power.
Despite the major alarms this line set off, it sounds OK. I mean, that the store would be doing badly for two years without the DM getting enough similar complaints to investigate is more than a little odd, but otherwise, and perhaps allowing for a bit of storytelling license, it's believable enough and a reasonable complaint.

So much for thoughts before reading the other comment thread.

AFTER is another story: the photos ruin his case. Amount of mayo would be unbelievable (unless he'd been such an unusually obnoxious posterior orifice on the first visit that someone wanted it to be obvious it was intended to be contrary to his order) even if it made sense that he'd take pictures of the food before throwing it away and long before there was any indication he'd need evidence.

Check the stamps. The photos posted on page 1 are not from the OP. Another poster put up random pics just because. The one with mayo is obviously a multi-decker awaiting the next layer.

The guy's kind of a douche, but if the story is legit, then the manager deserves some scrutiny, at the least.

The comments are insane. Fun thing, tho, we've got a link back here (was that you, OP?) and another comment later has a link about the CA decision that I posted about in another thread. LoL That site is way too insular.

That 'are you threatening me?' line from the deli manager just confirmed what I thought was happening to the OP in that thread: the manager wasn't being held back by policy, he was just being a dick. The fact that the DM told the guy that yes, the deli manager did have the authority to replace both sandwiches just made it worse on him. I like how most of the comments in that thread are calling the OP a jerk, though; you'd think every place they've been to scored perfect on every single Secret Shopper they've ever had. 9.9

Maybe everyone calling him a dick is related to the store manager.

Seriously--I don't see any way the OP was a dick. Maybe he got a little het up when he was talking to the store manager, but it sounds unbelievably frustrating for the guy to act like an officious prick. And then especially to call up the district manager and find out the guy lied about everything!

Nope, on the OP's side on this one. Maybe the guy shouldn't be fired, but if the store's been failing for 2 years, makes me think HE'S the common denominator of why it's failing...

Edit: Also he ain't the only one who hates mayo, I can't stand it...

I don't know if the customer was a dick here, because I'm 99% certain he is a liar.

              - The store cost $1 million to set up, and has been failing at that location for its entire 2-year existence. It is the only store failing in the company.

              - The district manager revealed that the store manager gets paid "more than you would ever imagine", and that it was "unbelievable" that he treated me like that given his high salary and authority granted to make decisions himself.
Why would a District Manager give a random customer that much of his company's financial information?

Either the customer has met the World's Least Professional DM, or he's lying about that part of the story.

It makes everything else in the story harder to believe, even if it is in part truthful.

I was curious about that as well. I've gotten in trouble before for just mentioning "the company is doing great right now" or "the company is slowing down for a bit".

Plus...I understand it sucks not having your food made right, but if you're overly particular about how its made...make it yourself.

                  Thanks for the responses.

I'm kinda torn because I think the OP of the thread I quoted is really just a troll. We're not moderated much over there.

Personally, I think he went a little overboard in his reaction, regardless if he was right or not. That said, the more posts I read from this guy, the more I think he's made the whole thing up.

And yes, that was me that posted the link for CS.

Asking for no mayo isn't being that particular, IMO. Although try telling that to the good people at Jimmy John's......

As for the rest......I think he might be completely full of shit, honestly.

The manager sounded like a dick, but did he really go through that much trouble just to return a frickin' sandwhich? It wasn't even the wrong order for crying out loud. Sucky set of circumstances (being there right on closing and on a friday), but he should have just let it go.

I've gone through a similar amount of trouble for a similar issue. It was the principle. They owed me the right food, and I was going to get the right food.

My guess is that there is a kernel of truth in there somewhere, and the rest is pure embellishment for the sake of the story.

There's no rule stating that both the manager and customer can't be dicks. Which is the option I'm going with.

And yeah, full of shiat me thinks. First of all the customer *was* acting like a dick, the fact the manager turned out to be lying later doesn't change that. Second of all, no way the DM just hopped on the phone and explained all their financial woes over 2 sandwiches.

If its not total bullshit, then I bet everyone in the story was ranked up by one. It wasn't the manager, it was the assistant manager, and it wasn't the DM, it was the manager, and he didn't get anyone fired, he just got a sandwich, and it wasn't because of a kind hearted employee going against her boss, it was because he complained long enough they wanted him to go away.

I think he had something similar happen, and then he just sort of elaborated the story to make it sound better.

                              A quick follow up.

The entire OP turned out to be complete fiction that was created by a banned poster in an attempt to incite or be funny or...who know- just to troll. So the thread has been deleted.

It did however spawn multiple other threads (a couple of which turned out to be pretty funny) as is the culture over there.

This one is referring to later in the original thread where the OP was discussing his tipping techniques. (Please note everything within is completely tongue in cheek)

This one is also pretty funny.
