  • Spokeo.com WTF!?!?!

    evil place

    "Not your grandma's phonebook" riiiiight.....
Itsthe new white pages which has info about EVERYONE based on name, email phone number address, BLOG posts, a list of all the blog sites and what not where you are, your age, wealth, credit score EVERY PIECE OF INFO available about you is THERE.
WHO THE HELL said this was ok? And WHY is this available to anyone? I mean you have to join and pay to see if you look up by name and address but WTF!? I am furious that this was out there, found it funny as they are way off since they have me at this texas residence that I haven't been at since 2007 but still...they even give a street view!
So if I was a killer/thief or whatever bad person this would lead me right to you! assuming the info was even right. Just for the heck of it i did look up a few people I know by email, the addresses are not all current but the age and most recent blog posts ARE.

    ON ANOTHER NOTE:
I went there and searched under email. and found my self.
if you save the URL of you and what is found under email, go to the bottom of the page and click privacy enter in the page, your email etc it sends a confirmation email to make sure your info is private. it works as i double checked within five minutes it could not find me via email.
Repeat after me, "I'm over it"
    Yeah we're so over, over
Things I hate, that even after all this time...I still came back to the scene of the crime

Yeah, that's kind of scary, but not surprising. Though if they can track you by your email or blog posts (and what about message board posts?), I say that's definately crossing the line.

Well, they sure don't know anything about my family...they have me listed under my husband's name (I kept my name when we got married) and that we're living with his mother (we've never lived with her, and my husband hasn't lived with her for almost 6 years -- and even then, it was only during summer break between semesters at school.) They don't have my parents listed at all, or if they do, I can't find them. They've lived in the same house for 25 years.

I suspect the site is a public information aggregation site, particularly based on how much duplication and outdated information is included.

I didn't know I owned my house, I was under the impression my parents did.

*laughs* With one email address, I'm married with kids. Another I'm single. With either one I make between 34 and 56K a year. Neither number is right.

Also it seems I live in two different places, although one of those is correct, except for home value. If this place was worth 400k I would be looking for the gold. Specially since bluebook on my home is less then my car.

I think it's creepy because yeah, of course it's gonna be off on some things...but on a lot of people, it's NOT. Like my friend posted about it that her underage friend had ALL of the right info, including home address and telephone number. And that's not cool at all.

It's grabbing things that anyone who wants to make the effort can grab already.

Hell, I've got more information than what it shows for me free and available online. And it still can't get it all and get it right. LoL

How the fuck has this website not been taken down yet? Maybe it's just me but I say this crosses the privacy line.

Because it's all public information. It's everything you've put online, from myspace when you were a teen and didn't know better to nowadays on facebook, to the photos you put up on photobucket, to even job reseme places. Including any information that any of your friends/lovers/family put up about you.

The internet isn't some place where you can put post stuff and later demand it gets taken off. That's why it's pretty much fact that once is online, it's likely never ever going to go away.

Okay, I'm going to do a few tests on that site myself...

                          First Test: Search by Name

...my info ended up popping up on the first page of the results list, but at my old address. Not good.

Second Test: Search By Email Address

Other than the results page listing me as a Scorpio (they're actually off by one day on their zodiac signs), I ended up finding results related to sites I haven't been to in years. My hackles are now up.

Third Test: Search By Phone Number (using my previous number)

Yep. That was my old carrier, alright...

Fourth Test: Search By Username (I have three variants of this username; I'll test them with all of them, starting with this version)

This version: It was way off as far as my Myspace info went. Last I checked, I wasn't in Washington. It did list my Hulu account, though, and that's bad enough.

Alternate version 1: ...and there's the real me down there. Right down to a couple sites I haven't visited in Sky Wizard knows how long. And oh, look! Thumbnails of my Photobucket album uploads! Goody, let's all have a look at the real me! FUUUUUUUUUUUU...

Alternate version 2: Oh, hello, YouTube account I hardly ever log into anymore! That dust just looks awful! I'm sure my loving stalkers would be more than happy to brush it off of you!

                          Final Test: Friends Search

It seems to have locked up 14 contacts into the search, but what I've seen is bad enough. Updates for the more active people on my contacts list as well as myself are extremely bad.

                          Verdict

Why has this site not been DDoS'd into a flaming pile of slag by now?!

Simple. I'll say it again. This is all stuff you PUT UP YOURSELF.

You have NO right to be angry at site, that puts stuff up that you decided to show the world in the first place. Don't like it? Then never put anything online.

Wow people are paranoid. Like others have said this is all public information that you put out on the internet yourself. Besides the information seems to be off for quite a few people. This isn't an invasion of privacy, it's simply gathering information that was already available and putting it in one place.
