I agree with this and I'm not even going to argue the appropriateness of the game.

There was enough evidence of cheating for Microsoft to act as they did. His mother even admits it. If she was any kind of parent at all she would've been asking her son if he did anything that might have prompted the cheater label, or looking into Microsoft's terms of service regarding xbox live accounts herself, or keeping on her son's case until the truth finally did come out.

Anything but going right to the media and getting the autism awareness crowd on her side. Even though the truth's now out it will get at most 1% of the public attention the original story did.

All this kid's mother taught him was to play the autism card whenever you do something wrong. Bravo. How many stories are there on the main board about crappy parents making excuses for their children's behavior anyway?

I was of the opinion that the kid probably had cheated even before it was revealed. Microsoft tends to be extremely conservative when it comes to marking accounts for that - if there's any doubt, the account doesn't get marked (but does get watched more carefully).

This is kind of the thing, most companies actually are extremely conservative when it comes to this. They make damn *damn* sure before they do anything. Microsoft is actually rather against the grain by actually using the Cheater label. With most companies not a peep of it would be public, the person in question would just vanish from the service.

But with Live! since you're just farking up Achievements, which doesn't actually affect anyone else, I imagine they went with the Cheater label as the public shame option since your gamer score is little more than a big e-peen anyhow. If you cheat in multiplayer however, I'm sure you'd just vanish.

With your typical console game, you'd be absolutely right. However, in this specific instance, the cheating was done to gain achievements on an online 'forum' of sorts and was against the ToS.

Also, how severly autistic is the child? Just because he can push the buttons on the controller & keep up with the play-by-play of the game with other people doesn't mean a) that he can understand everything being said, b) can speak at all therefore not being able to parrot back what he has heard.

This kid can speak. He was on the Fox video saying that Microsoft took away his achievements.

Frankly, I think its down right unhealthy for ANY child, regardless of disabilities, to spend such a long period sitting in front of a video game. I'm sure it is his all time favourite thing, but so what? Its his mother's responsibility to keep tabs on his behaviour.
