I can't see how a society free of sexual hang-ups would result in fewer strip clubs.

I suppose in a non-repressed society, more women might feel comfortable stripping for their men at home, or being more adventurous in bed, but so what? It doesn't mean that every man in the world will have a beautiful woman willing to give it up for them at any time.

And even if they do - it wouldn't matter. It's like that old saying, "Show me a beautiful woman, and I'll show you a guy who's tired of fucking her." Men will always want to sample from a smorgasboard, and strip clubs offer that.

Absolutely. But the illicit allure (it's not illegal, but many, many people bang a drum about it being immoral) would be gone. With that gone, the total demand would drop.

Currently, Seattle and Portland have the most strip clubs per capita in the US. Both are socially progressive cities.

By your theory, strip clubs should be more predominant in the Bible Belt.

I imagine they would be, if they weren't de facto illegal (IE, zoned out of anywhere that they can operate) in most of the bible belt. NIMBY-ism is like that.

Edit: Actually, I'll concede the point, provisionally. If society changed to that degree, strip clubs would nearly disappear, while brothels would boom - who would pay for a little attention and tease, when you can pay instead to scratch the itch that the strip club is only teasing?

I imagine that if we stopped being so weird about it, strip clubs would become part of brothels. Sometimes all a person wants is a little tease.

We had a similar situation in a Seattle suburb last Summer when a bikini car wash business wanted to have a, well, bikini car wash with proceeds going to Make-A-Wish.

The Organization turned it down, and as much as I despise feeling this way, I have to say in that incident, I agree with Make-A-Wish's decision.

I mean, can you imagine the outcry? And I'm sure that those that would be outcrying would be all screeching ten times worse than the screechiest Sucky Customer.

Yeah, I know pretty chickenshit for it to be that way, and that I feel that way, but the screechers have gotten their way before; remember the ones that pretty much forced Proctor & Gamble to change their Logo?

There is an important difference between a donation by the Mafia and a donation by a strip club.

The strip club is a legal enterprise. One that may be hotly debated on the morality of it, but since morality is a religious issue and there is a separation (supposedly) between church and state as long as it follows the civil laws (permits, occupancy limits, liquor licences, etc) is a legal enterprise.

The Mafia...not so much. We may not have enough evidence to shut the mafia down, but we can be fairly certain that at least some if not all of the money donated comes from criminal activities.

As someone said, this was a quiet donation that someone looked at it closely and said "OMG! Boobies were involved! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGG!!!!"

Amen. I know quite a few women who stripped, modeled nude, or worked in porn to pay for their college education. As one girl put it in an interview "My good looks aren't going to survive much longer than my first child. Might as well get some use out it while I have it."

We also had a online porn site in our area called The Wetlands based on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that is a source of supplemental income for more mature women who are willing to show off their goods.

We are WAY too hung up over our bodies here in America. Between that and the <ahem> quality of television here in the US...it frequently makes me wish I was born in England

There was a girl in my first year of college who stripped to pay for said college. She was very quiet about the whole deal until one of the local frats decided to 'celebrate' for her. The school and her had a very long debate and she ended up moving out of the dorms, out of the school, and back home several states away to try and finish college.

I caught up with her once before I finished the year...ya know I'm proud of her. She's going to finish college with no student loans and enough to hold her until she gets a job in her field. (Which since she was accounting she could just stay with the business...)
