  • A Story From The Trenches At My Store, File Under "Entitlement Mentality"

Misty and I were sent out to a Society for Creative Anachronisms event in Florence, Arizona last month. The SCA is a medieval recreation and re-enactment club that focuses on the years between 1066-1500. They hold competitions and tournaments for all the hobbies their members practice from Fencing, Archery, and full mock battles with padded weapons to home brewing, medieval cooking, textiles crafts, and costuming.....just about any skill practiced in the middle ages.

The Great Estrella War XXVIII (28) was held at Canyon Moon Ranch and was a week long event. Monday through Friday was fine. But on Saturday a windstorm hit with reports of winds gusting from 45-60 miles per hour. That blew in a Dust Storm. On the tail end of that we got hit with rain. The grommets on the rain tarp ripped out, stakes pulled out of the ground, the tent nearly blew away multiple times. At one point there was a mandatory evacuation notice going around......But that's not why I'm posting this.

Misty sent in a story to Retail Hell Underground from the event. During the Dust Storm when our tent was threatening to go flying away, a customer came by and demanded that we sell him some Vanilla Perfume..... here's the story

Seriously? We're about to loose our tent and all our merchandise and his asshat wants us to let go of everything to sell him 3 bottles of perfume?

I'd be lying if I said I was surprised.

Some people are incapable of thinking about anybody but themselves.

Even at that, though, I'd have expected them to be concerned about keeping themselves safe, not with shopping for perfume.

I read that story on RHU. What a selfish prick!

Amazing. How does someone zero in on scented oils and ignore a full-force gale blowing the tent and everything around it off the ground?! I know that too many people are horrifically self-centered, but that goes beyond.

I wonder if anyone from my local SCA went to Estrella? I'll have to ask at the next meeting. I'm sure they've got stories to tell.
