Is she the one who registered for the room? No. Thus she shouldn't be allowed to get a key.

Even if she was allowed in the room, saying no would have been the right thing to do. No harm, no foul. If she wants a key so badly, she can get one from her husband if she's supposed to be in there.

It's none of the worker's business why she's not allowed in. If you weren't the one to register for a room, you aren't allowed in without the renter's permission.

Honestly, if a person's name isn't on the room, then they shouldn't ever get a key unless the person whose name is on the room gives them one.

So does this mean I get to complain to the hotel staff if they don't give me a key to my husband's room because my last name is different than his, even though we're married?

The way I view it is that if your name isn't on the register for the room then no key for you, at all. I never even realized that it was okay for anybody to go past the front desk of any hotel unless they were a guest there or being lead up by the occupant of the room in particular. But then I don't make use of hotels very often so what do I know? *shrugs*

One thing I didn't see is how was the room being paid for? That would make a bit of difference.

My name is *very* common, and if having a matching name is enough to get into my room...I'm in trouble. I'd never even concidered that someone could go up to the desk and get a key just by having a similar name, so why would I have known to warn them not to let them? I've never once told my bank that noone who isn't me isn't allowed to withdraw from my account, for that matter (My Wife is on the account, so 'tis a given she can)

Personally, if I'm at a hotel with my Wife, and they give her a key because she's got the right name...I'm checking out, then and there, and finding someplace that's got a clue about security. If they confirmed she had a credit card that matched the one I had on file, I'd hesitate a bit longer...but since I always give my cell phone as a contact, they'd better be calling THAT number, first!
