  • Computer "Security"

I am amazed at how many people know next to nothing about computer security or protecting themselves. What is funny is I previously thought I knew a decent amount about computers until I started watching Hak5 on a regular basis and some of the shit they come up with or mention is down right insane.

I expected the people they interviewed at defcon (prestigious hacker convention) to be really skilled. but what is scary is how some of the segments they do show how easily things can be manipulated or bypassed with relatively no skill. You just need the right tools which are easily downloaded and the ability to follow directions

I knew that it was possible to steal passwords over http on certain protocols like ftp and telnet. What I didn't know was how easily cookies could be jacked if your not using https on sites like facebook and gmail. To the point in the demo using a firefox plugin called "firesheep", one host logged into his twitter, the other host using the plugin was able to start posting like she was darren.

The scary part is the amount of information that can be gathered just by listening to the traffic on the network and not even actively attacking a computer trying to trick it into routing all information through you, although when you go for an active attack you get better results like earlier i could tell my brother was on farmville instead of doing homework

Secure communications are encrypted to prevent in-transit sniffing. Unsecured communications aren't, and are easier to pick up.

Yes, but most people would read this sentence and go "what does this have to go with the clicky thing that makes the interwebs go?"

and then wonder how their identity got stolen.
