My daughter has her favorite wooden sword (which we bought her at the Medieval Times at Anne Arundel Mills Mall). She has named her wooden sword Billy.

Her favorite toys (depending on the day, the time of day, her mood, whatever) are: Shelly & Henry, her 2 pillow pets. Her Rapunzel (Tangled movie) baby doll. Her Gus the Gecko stuffed animal.

I'm all for "Let's not make my daughter only play with "girl" toys/play girl sports" and vice versa for boys, but this is a little ridiculous.

That's kind of funny. He's probably going to go into kindergarten proclaiming that girls have cooties.

I love those swords-they were selling them at the medieval fair I was part of. The son of one of the members (he looked about 8 or so) bought one and was using it for swordfighting lessons. Said sword came with its own wooden scabbard.

As for girls not playing with dollies and such, my mum never enforced it on us. My sister had a bunch of trucks for the sandpit and while we played with barbies, we didn't go overboard.

Some of my sister's favorite toys were her Matchbox cars. She had a whole bunch. She even named them (writing the names on little pieces of paper and taping them to the cars) after the characters of her two favorite soap operas: Days of Our Lives and The Young & the Restless.

Child Rum's sword didn't come with a scabbard, I'm sorry to say. But she does like to sleep with it. (Not sure if there is an "inappropriate" joke there, but I'm sure there is. ) But then again, more than half her full-sized bed is crammed full with her "Favorite" toys. I'm surprised she can find a spot to sleep in!

Same here. The first and only time I was given a doll, I cut its head off and melted its body on the cooker top. XD

When I was a kid, I was a real tomboy. I played with toy cars and guns, I had Transformer and Rock Lord toys, I played football and cricket, and I was fascinated by bugs and dinosaurs.

Now tho, I wear skirts and dresses, I wear makeup and I'm not against wearing pink occasionally. Forcing a kid to be genderless is just as damaging as forcing a kid to conform to stereotypical gender roles. My niece loves pink, Hello Kitty and dolls; that's her choice. She was given the choice of toys and just happened to prefer dolls over robots.

So, when the kid's finally toilet trained, how are they supposed to know which restroom to take the little one to when they're out in public?

Yes; they need some base to build their identity on. "Generic Human Being" doesn't quite cut it.

Assuming it's boy, if they train him to only pee sitting down and he chooses a more fiminine atire, I could imagine him having an epiphiny and exclaiming after leaving a public restroom
                  "I can pee standing up!"

Based on the most recent article, they're not hiding it, but they're also not sharing it with people on the outside.

I really do think that it says a lot about society that so many people are all atwitter over this when, honestly, it should be a non-issue.

                      Let him pick.

Well, all jokes aside, he can't pick. Because then everyone would have to be allowed to pick. And I'm sorry, I go into a ladies loo, I expect there won't be men in there.

For the next six years or so, he/she will go with a parent and the choice will be according to sex of the parent.
After that he/she must chose. It's not much different, in my opinion, than a born male transgendered person going into the womens bathroom.

Do the parents decide on which bathroom to use based on their gender or what they feel like that day? I'm curious.

Slight difference-you really don't check what's between the legs in a bathroom?

Also, with the bathroom issue, there's a way for FTM and MTF's to get around that problem (most of the time). They use bathroom stalls.

I'm all for letting kids do what they want regardless of gender.

However, evolution has made it so that everyone (with extremely rare exceptions) is born one or the other. That's how it works. Khan was born with a penis, so he's male.

If he wants to dance ballet or be a football player or even surgically change his gender later, great. I want him to be happy. But he'll still be male or female. It seems stupid to pretend the world is any other way.
