Stupid "black" names...why?

I live in a big, diverse city so I've seen a little bit of everything. Most of the names I encounter are pretty normal, if not a little boring. But every now and then I see one that makes me do a double take. One that stands out in particular was a mother in a store calling for a child named Mimzy.
Generally speaking I don't really care what other people choose to name their kids, because it really doesn't affect me or my life. Naming is such a personal choice, and different people (myself included) have different criteria and ideas about what they think construes a good name and what they think is a bad name.
When I was pregnant my husband and I decided we didn't want to use any biblical names for our kids. We're not religious, and we also think that biblical names are way too popular, and was something we wanted to avoid for our kids. We wanted a name that wasn't too popular, but wasn't completely obscure, and was relatively easy to spell and pronounce.
For our son we decided on Spencer Elliott. I wanted Elliott as his first name but my husband said no. He wanted Blake as his first name, but I said no. So we compromised and found a different first name and then used Elliott in the middle spot. Our daughter is named Vivian Judith. We both just liked the name Vivian, and Judith is in honor of my grandmother who passed away from breast cancer when I was young. A lot of people think our daughter's name is old fashioned or that we named her after someone, but we didn't we just liked it.

My mother knew a woman who named her daughter Galadriel and mangled the pronunciation in the process. The girl's nickname was Gala (pronounced gay-la).

I've got double-biblical as well (though both are derivatives and not direct), though no alliteration.

My first name (Amy) is Latin for "Beloved" and my middle name is the feminine version of Dionysus (Greek God of Wine) so my names mean "Beloved God of Wine". Hehehehe. However, the only wine I like are whites & reds that aren't so dry. Also, wine isn't exactly my favorite to drink. So I'm weird (but then again, I grew up in a house where my parents were almost practically teetotalers).Last edited by IDrinkaRum; 05-31-2011, 05:53 PM.Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Both sides of my family are Roman Catholics. No Biblical names here.
As I said before, Mr. Rum's middle name is Biblical and he hates it. It's not a "normal" biblical name neither. It's Zadok. Really. Honest-to-goodness. Zadok. And his father wanted Zadok as a first name (so instead of B Zadok which is his name, he would have been Zadok B). Mr. Rum is named after both of his grandpas. Mr. Rum's paternal grandma was all like, "Son, you're an idiot. B Zadok is fine. Don't do that to your own baby boy". I think I would have liked his grandma.Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Moo. Moo. Java. Timey Wimey

If by some twisted turn of events I end up fathering a child I want to name a boy Judas, every other biblical name has had plenty of turns and out side of the bible I've never encountered it aside from "Arnold Judas Rimmer" from red dwarf.
Aside from my middle name, I share the same name as a movie director, but thats not why I no longer go by my first name, nor was I named after him.

If you want to guess which horror movie character I share a name with... well, think TVs with static, scary clown dolls and swimming pools full of corpses. Tho I was not named after that movie, seeing as it was created after my birth. That hasn't stopped people from referencing that, oh no."Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

I just want to add that where I came from "Candida" is not so uncommon a name. It is still used as a word, it means pure, or sincere. I have seen it used in very sweet ways.
My personal suggestion for my sisterĀ“s name was Brenda. It is a short strong name, with a nice meaning.
Both me an my sister were name after historical personalities. One of the greatest concerns of my mother was to give us easily spelled names not easily made in to perjorative nicknames.

The Amy's are awesome! Well, at least I think so.
Yeah, I don't think there's anything associated with my middle name & children's shows. That I can think of off the top of my head.
Child Rum's first name is actually my maiden name. Which I'm happy about. At least I can remember how to spell it. Though I can't count how many times I've been asked why I'd spell it with "just a y" instead of an "ie". Oi. Really? The "just a y" is, I think, the more popular spelling.Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Moo. Moo. Java. Timey Wimey
