I only ever got smacked as a child as a last resort... and then only after been warned to quit misbehaving. My parents always followed thru on threats; and the few times (as in, I can count them on one hand) that I got a smack, it was cuz I'd ignored warnings, threats and verbal tellings off.
I also remember a girl I knew at primary school. Her parents were against all kinds of physical punishment and used to never smack her when she misbehaved, but instead gave her a massive lecture on what she had done and afterwards made her write an essay to say that she was sorry. Given the choice between a smack and a punishment like that, I'd choose the smack. O_o
