What use to drive me nuts is when I was working drive thru people often wanted to give me tips but I wasn't allowed to accept any by company policy which would piss off customers who felt that they deserved the right to tip me.

What annoys me is all the places in Australia putting out tip jars and such, hell no I'm not tipping you just because you made a coffee or got me a piece of cake, you earn $18-$20 an hour, that's more than I'm earning in the same industry.

Quite frankly, those stupid tip jars at Subway, Cold Stone, Starbucks wherever, are presumptuous and rude. You don't deserve tips if you make a standard hourly wage and are not considered a tipped profession. Put that stupid jar away and quit begging.
I agree. That's why I only tip servers, delivery drivers and anybody in the tipping profession only.

Part of the reason is because they're doing you a service in even the shittiest of weather. And even on holidays everyone else gets off (possibly). So why not do something nice for them?

That's a big part of the reason.

Now, the something nice doesn't have to be money. It could be a small gift, or baked goods, or what have you. Or a gift card. To thank them for their service.

I guess I could see doing something like that. I just don't like the idea of giving extra money to someone that already makes so much more than me when I don't have a lot of it and they are the kind of mail men who drive from mail box to mail box never getting out of their vehicle.

I have a hard enough time getting 30 - 50% of the people in my delivery area to even tip much less during the "holiday season" one of my worst shifts was during a blinding blizzard. I had a 65% stiff rate that night (and this was not the only shift that this has happened) and only a few people decided that a "little extra" for the pizza guy was needed (most like because well that is my JOB and not understanding that I get paid sub minimum wage PLUS it is assumed and expected that I receive tips on EVERY delivery))

That's a big part of the reason.

most of the time the "thanks" I get is "drive safe" or "have a good night" or "stay cool" as they straight stiff or joke tip me and say some unmeant phrase in a sickly sweet voice that grates your ears enough to induce massive and spontanious bleeding from several orrifiaces.

Yeah sure I will just write a check out to my landlord for 400 "have a Good NIGHT" and 50 "drive safetly" to pay my rent next month and see how well that goes over.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

I got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the Twilight Zone.

I over tip anyone that I know is making a living primarily from their tips as a way to try and make up for the jerks.

Racket_Man, I was just explaining the etiquette reason behind tipping your mailman and newspaper boy. Besides, not everybody stiffs the delivery guy. I know I don't. A little bit of kindness, you know?

A bit of kindness would be tipping the pizza boy instead of compliments, or giving the money to your kid, sending your kid with a stiff, oh, and not leaving your porch light on.

Mail carriers have much better benefits than me. I'm not giving them anything.

Yeah, I hate the tip jars with a passion, because it has jaded people to tipping where it is appropriate. Up until recently (last couple of years) most people understood that if someone other than a bell person was helping you with your luggage at a hotel, they were going above and beyond what was expected of them (and by definition more than what they were being paid for) and it would be appropriate to give a small tip... now everyone has the attitude of "oh god, yet another lazy bum expecting a handout"
Umm, no, if I were a lazy bum I'd of told you hauling luggage wasn't my job and that you could fend for yourself. I don't expect tips when I cover shifts at the hotel, but when I haven't even said anything about a tip and guests go off on me about how selfish I am expecting a tip (remember, nothing said about tipping by me) really pisses me off.

I would prefer to eliminate tipping altogether, it is annoying as shit to pay a price and be expected to pay more. I like the idea of tipping when someone is going ABOVE your expectations or the norm, but considering how badly most people are getting screwed on wages I find it hard to support someone else. Also, I heard a saying before of if your making a living doing X, charge a price that you can live off of and not depend on tips. I think it Bs that delivery drivers get sub-min wage especially if they charge a delivery fee the company shouldn't basically look for people to screw over.

OH god yes that delivery fee.

They introduced that around here. The price of the pizza didn't go down and I am still expected to tip the driver but suddenly there is a delivery fee? Anyone know what that is even for?

The delivery fee is to encourage people to come in and pick their food up. And, in some places, some of it actually goes to the driver.

As a note, anyone earning below minimum wage who doesn't make enough in tips to bring them up to at least minimum wage is to be paid enough to bring them up to that level. How one would go about making sure that happens is not something I know, however, but would certainly be available at the local labor board.

Because, the cost of paying the driver went up, and a lot of places decided that they would rather add the delivery fee and discourage people from ordering delivery (or at the very least recover some of the cost of having to pay the driver) rather than raising the cost of everything and potentially alienating their pick up customers.

That's funny cuz the places I order from are not the places I would pick up from.
