I mean, yeah, SOME of those people probably should be shot, but not simply for the reason of disagreeing with your point on this or of using those reasons to disagree.
What reasons do you mean, though? "Life's not fair" isn't a reason."My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

If it was laid down in the book, then the mother could have either found an alternative way to educate her son, for example, a less strict school or homeschooling, or she could have cut his hair and taken out the earring.
I agree that the long hair rule is stupid; my fiance had problems with his bosses when he grew his hair. I told him to tell them that they were sexist and as long as he kept his hair tied back and clean, there was no problem. They agreed, somewhat unwillingly. But while I agree with the long hair issue, I don't agree in the way the mother dealt with it; ie, running whining to the media and possibly pulling the charity card.
Her actions have singled out her son in the cruelest possible way... and children can be very cruel towards someone they perceive as different. While they wouldn't have known anything was different about this boy before; long hair on kids tends to pass them by, they do now. While protesting thru the proper forms "might not work", it's still the mature way of dealing with a problem. Petitions, meetings with other parents, working towards getting the handbook updated would be a lot better than going to the media. The school might even react to the media attention by digging its heels in over this issue even more cuz they've been put on the spot.
My school had rules about piercing and hair, too. Only one piercing in the ear lobe, and studs or sleepers to be worn. Hair should only be dyed natural colours. I don't remember anyone kicking up a fuss about those rules; they were accepted as part of the uniform, and parents supported the school rather than expecting the school to have different rules for their little precious."Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."
