It gets better...apparently the guy who is the chef for the prison said that he would pay for their last meals....the prison folks said no to that as well. The cook sounded like a pretty decent guy.

I read about that and it did change my stance on the last meals being nixed. I get that they want to put a kibosh on the last meals but I don't get why they won't take up an offer where the tax payers aren't footing the bill for it.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people...

Because it's not really about the money; that's just a convenient excuse for the people in charge to behave like monsters.

Not much to add to that, I guess...

The whole purpose of the last meal was to say that the society that was removing the person from their midst was better than that person.

Were I that cook's manager, though, I'd be tempted to nix their request. The issue for me would be what about the next cook to hold that job? Would they be pressured to do it? Would it be expected of them? What about prisoners who suddenly didn't get it? They'd not be in a position to sue in a few hours, I guess, but let's be fair here - there are more ramifications than someone not getting a feast to this offer.

I have a little humour book called 'The Little Book of Bad Taste'. It's rather amusing. The facts within are uncited, but one of the sections within is 'Ten Last Meals'. Seems like the total lack of appetite is common.

Though one of the facts was a man who'd sold his body to science for $10, and spent it on minor edible luxuries...he still had a $1 note in his pocket, so he requested two slices of bread for his last meal and had a money sandwich. XD

I can dig out the book if people want names...

Seriously though, one guy was a dick about it so they stopped it all together? Removing that last token bit of respect they have for human life does more to dehumanize the excutioners than the excutionee.
                Very well said.

He probably gave most of it away to other inmates on death row. Maybe that was partially the intent.

You nailed it on the head. This really isn't about cost or victims rights. Its about making headlines and boosting poll numbers. Politicians love to look "tough" on crime.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.
