Whether cats are let out or not is, in my mind, a debate for another thread. I don't have a fully formed opinion on what the proper behavior should be. But by pointing out that its common I was saying that its something that is rarely thought twice over. Maybe bringing the question up would cause people to rethink, but in this case, with nothing brought up, the cat-owner had no reason to stop letting her cats roam free.

Besides that society for no reason seems to approve of letting cats mess with other people's property. If your pet is out of your control, I have to question that person's ability to be a pet owner. So if you can't stop your cat from stepping on my property, your pet is out of your control. Leash it, fence it in. Don't piss off your neighbors. Was it wrong to poison the cats? Yes. But the whole situation could have been avoided in the first place by being a responsible pet owner.Originally posted by Hyena Dandy View Postthe cat-owner had no reason to stop letting her cats roam free.Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. It approves of letting cats roam free. If you have a problem with the cat, take it up with the owner.
People aren't born with magic responsibility. If they're being irresponsible, you should tell them that, and then they can learn.
Whether or not they should have let the cats out, my point was no-one told her why should stop."Nam castum esse decet pium poetam

I think what this woman did was disgusting and reckless.
But, I really despise roaming neighbourhood cats. They shit in my backyard, eat the finches I love to watch on my feeder, and sit on the ledge of my windows and piss off my dogs.
I understand that cats are roamers and it's cruel to lock them inside all day. That's why I don't own a cat.

I don't think it's cruel. As I said, several of my friends own cats and keep them inside all the time. The cats are completely happy. I also know people who walk their cats on leashes or give supervised outdoor play. There are other ways to entertain your cat besides just letting it roam outside.Originally posted by Boozy View PostI understand that cats are roamers and it's cruel to lock them inside all day. That's funny considering know plenty of cats who are indoor cats and they don't suffer one bit.Originally posted by Boozy View PostI understand that cats are roamers and it's cruel to lock them inside all day.Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. my cats are 100% inside, safe from getting hit by a car, safe from being tormented or injured by heartless humans, safe from deadly diseases(feline leukemia, FIV, FIP, feline sarcoma(cancer) virus, distemper, feline chlamydia, respiratory herpes, to name a few-all spread by contact with infected animals, or waste from infected animals, not all preventable by vaccine) ,safe from potentially dealy parasitical infection, safe from getting killed or injured by wildlife(raccoons, opossums, coyotes, bobcats). If that's cruel, then I guess I hate my cats.Originally posted by Boozy View PostI understand that cats are roamers and it's cruel to lock them inside all day. That's why I don't own a cat.
huh, how about that? Many people still cling to the myth that cats need to be let outside at night to roam the neighborhood, hunt mice, harass other cats, and do everything else your typical alley cat does. Some would even go as far to say it's cruel to keep your kitty inside all the time!

I'm prepared to admit that cats can be happy indoors. I'm not a cat person, and have never owned one, so I didnt know. I only knew that everyone who advocates letting cats roam the neighborhood said so "because it's cruel to leave them inside all day."
As I said, I don't like roaming cats, and I'm even more firmly in that camp now that I know they can be happy otherwise.
I know my dogs are perfectly happy indoors for most of the day. They go for a run with me every morning and a long brisk walk every evening with my husband. Sometimes we practically have to drag them out the door.Last edited by Boozy; 10-03-2011, 11:23 PM.

I have 2 cats. One boy. One girl. They both have their claws (much to the detriment of a certain rug and some sheer curtains). My boy will get out on the front porch, look around and then hop back in. Well, he does that now. Before, he got out a few times and actually bolted to another house. The first time he got out, it was Halloween, I cried for two hours before we found him. I was that upset.
Cats aren't harmed by being kept indoors all the time. It's not cruel. I agree with BlaqueKatt: I'm protecting smaller creatures from people, places, things that can harm them. (And why is it only cats that should be "allowed" to roam? Why not dogs? I don't hear no one saying dogs should roam - isn't it the same thing: keeping an animal that used to roam inside all the time?)Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Maybe it's me but... the only way I know to prevent a cat from roaming is to make it an indoor-only cat.Originally posted by Peppergirl View PostWhat people need to remember is that it's not the fault of the animal. It's the fault of the owner for letting the animal roam.
I'm a responsible pet owner, but occasionally my cats will get out. It happens. When they do, if there's any mischief-making on their part, I am responsible since they are my pets. I would apologize accordingly and (hypothetically) offer to wash a car or fix whatever damage they did.
But attempting to poison my pet because it got out? Yeah, fuck that. Lets just say I'd be in jail.
I don't see why that should be mandatory. I mean sure my own kitty is indoor only but that was because when I first got him it wasn't safe for him to roam (next to a 55mph road). now he's pretty much just use to it.
But I don't see why anyone should tell me how to raise my own cat as long as i don't abuse it or break the law.

They started forming a pack and started getting a bit wild. Sis and I weren't allowed near them when they came around.

Because it's inconsiderate to allow your cat to go wherever it wants, especially other people's property. And when you let that cat out the front door to roam where it wants, you have no control over your pet. Leash it, keep it fenced in, or keep it inside. I don't let my dogs shit on other people's lawns, attack people, or attack other animals. Why is it okay for people to let their cats do any of that?Originally posted by PepperElf View PostBut I don't see why anyone should tell me how to raise my own cat as long as i don't abuse it or break the law.Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. I'm not going to go psycho over a door ding but I will demand payment to fix it. I don't ding other folks cars and I demand the same treatment, and in the very unlikely event I do ding another car I will offer to pay for the repair and I will actually pay. Cars are just too danged expensive to allow needless damage to occur. I try very hard to live by the Golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.Originally posted by Rageaholic View PostI've been yelled at by people who *think* I might have dented their car when I opened my door (they were parked too close to the line, not my fault). I don't understand why so many get bent out of shape over it. Most of the time it doesn't even dent the car and even if it did, is it anything to go psycho over?
Way back when I had just got out of the Army and bought a used car. The first night I had it a big tom cat whizzed on the hood and damaged the paint. No matter what I used I couldn't fix it and eventually had to paint it. My very first new truck for some reason attracted the neighbors cat. If the door was open in it would go and it was heck getting it out. Neighbor didn't care as it wasn't bothering them. If the cat wasn't inside my truck then it was roosted somewhere on it. I asked and asked them to control their cat and they ignored me so I finally caught the thing took it's collar off and took it to the pound. It didn't return.
I've also had neighbors dogs chase my new born calves and pull the switches off their tails. I won't put up with it and I won't warn the owners. If my cattle are being harassed I'll kill the offending critter.
In my AO there is a county ordinace that requires all pets to be leased when outside of the owners property, including snakes and especially cats.Cry Havoc and let slip the marsupials of war!!!
