This is the best tribute cartoon to Steve Jobs. The Buzz Lightyear quote and space suit doesn't just symbolize how he influenced and revolutionized computers and the world but technology as a whole not just with Apple but with Pixar. He dared to dream, be different and was proof that the geeks shall inherit the earth. Rest In Peace, Steve Jobs.

Eeeehh....I find the massive outpouring of grief and idolization kind of creepy to be honest. I won't deny his contributions to technology and I tip my hat to him for Pixar. But comparing him to Edison or Ford? His second ( and most successful ) turn at Apple was because he was a charismatic businessman. He didn't develop the iPod or the iPhone or any of the other big tickets. He ordered other people to do it ( and I bet you can't name a one of them without checking Wikipedia ) and they were built upon existing tech from other companies. Apple, and Job's brilliance, was presenting that tech in an easier to use package coupled with elevated the brand name itself above the actual technology.

It just seems really weird to idolize someone for being a great at business and marketing. He's not even philanthropist like Gates. In fact by all indications he was a bit of a jerk in his personal life. -.-

Yeah, I have to agree with GK on this. He was an exceptional marketer and the epitome of a capitalist businessman (for better or worse). That's as far as I'll remember him as. He's not some messiah that brought the world out of the dark age. Honestly, the only thing I could attribute solely to him is the cult of personality he formed around himself.

Hyperbole, but a comparison to Edison makes sense: after all, once he got started, it was his company that came up with the other inventions he's famous for. And if I remember rightly, the original Apple computer was the first you could get at home without having to build it yourself; certainly a significant step, even if it's clear *someone* would have done it eventually anyway. (After all, you can say the same about many other developments that are credited to someone or other.)

Edison was one of the most prolific inventors in human history. Jobs was a great businessmen who, by all accounts, was a complete tyrant, bully and all around asshole to work for and with. Total control freak over all things Apple and quite content to let his products be built by child labour. Not to mention manipulate the media or have the home's of bloggers raided for daring to talk about his products before they launched.

No, you still had to build it yourself. Just less of it. The circuit board was all that came preassembled. You still had to build a case for it, wire in a power supply, power switch, keyboard, wire in video, etc. Basically it was a motherboard in a box, and you still had to build the rest of the computer from scratch. Hardly accessible to the general public. -.-

The Apple II came relatively preassembled, you might be thinking of it and was indeed likely the first or one of the first preassembled home computers. Until the IBM PC hit a couple years later and, honestly, blew Apple out of the water ever since. For all the hype, actual Apple computers are only about 10% of the market share compared to PC platforms.

Apple's resurgence was in mobile devices, not desktop computers.

on paper, yes. in reality, not so much. the majority of the inventions he's credited with were actually invented by the people who worked for him at menlo park. he just put his own name on the patents. also, most of the inventions he's credited with were not original ideas, merely improvements on existing tech.

I bought an Apple][+ in the early 1980's with no need to assemble anything. I plugged in the 2 5 1/4 floppies, the greenscreen monitor, and plugged it into the wall and fired it up. yes I did add things like an 80-column dotmatrix printer, 300 BPS moden, joystick and a co-processor running C/PM.

One of the BIG reasons that IBM suceeded was
1. they used off the self parts and kept it simple.
2. they did NOT vigiriously pursue lawsuits against outside companies trying to "copy" theIBM PC . Franklin was on the loosing end of one of Apple's lawsuits when they tried to copy the Apple ][+/c/e. IBM on the other had allowed a "clean" reverse engineering. How do you think Compaq got started and grew into the company it is (no comment how good of a company just saying that many many companies owe their exsistance to the "clean" reverse of IBMs POST and BIOS). Quite. I have a developer's license with Apple. If you put anything on the App store, you're forbidden from porting it to any other mobile device. IE if I make a game and put it on the iPhone, I'm not allowed to sell it anywhere else that might in any way compete with Apple. Which is why we haven't put anything on the App Store yet. Nor will we. -.-

My view on it is

I have always said charisma is the most powerful force in the universe. And Steve Jobs had it. He knew how to sell, and knew how to manage, two incredibly useful abilities.

Whether he personally invented everything, or anything, is irrelevant. What is relevant is that he could make you believe he COULD have.

He had charisma. And that made him great, all other things aside.

Besides, I always find it appropriate to mourn when I find out somenoe died. Which is why I never read obituaries, puts me in a funk all day. I mean, I know people die every day, but I don't need to know their stories.

This. Edison was an asshole. Grade A jealous douchebag. Not to say Tesla didn't have his quirks (and boy, did he ever), but he got shafted pretty regularly by a number of different "inventors" who were better at stealing credit and selling themselves than necessarily inventing.

That's funny. Cut the Rope just became available for Android after having been on Apple for a while. Either they changed things and your info is out of date, or ZeptoLab or Chillingo found a loophole and are exploiting it.
