Ah, but playgrounds don't have lots and lots of money to start a class action against to get hold of.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of "Little Timmy is less likely to drop trou and whizz on the slide if mum's watching". (Yes I know they do clean the playground every so often, but how long until then?)

Also aren't public playgrounds owned by a local council or whatever the US equivelent is?

As for the germ-laden thing, I've heard of parents asking about how long they should keep their 3-year-old out of daycare because said child is coming home with a runny nose or cough. Usually the response has been (paraphrased): "Stick that kid back in there, he needs to build an immune system!"

The one thing that always made me laugh was the Dettol No-Touch hand system. Probably handy if you can't push the plunger down (some of the plastic ones tend to fall over if there's too little in the bottle) or you have people who use too much/too little soap, but the ads don't promote that. They go "OH NOEZ! U IZ GONNA GET GURMS FROM UR PUMP! OH NOEZ!!!!!"

Little kid: "Mommy, I need to go potty!" *points at bathroom*
Mother: "Dear lord, no! You are not using a public bathroom! Do you know what they're like?!" *drags away*

Seriously, did she swab the door going into the restaurant? The handle of her own car door? The handle of her own home? The door to her own bathroom? Her kid's clothes, even freshly out of the washing machine? Her own skin??

What about her purse, that I'm sure like most women she's set down on a kitchen counter or a table somewhere...AFTER setting it down on a public bathroom floor. Does she swab grocery carts, grocery bags? As someone said, every playground her kid goes too? The kid's school desk? The kid's friends??

Germs and bacteria are freakin' everywhere! What does she want her kid playing in a bubble? Does she want McDonald's to sanitize their play area like they do surgical suites?

Let your kid grow an immune system already!

There are strains of MRSA that produce something called KCP. They are sensitive to NO antibiotics. We have a patient with that strain in the hospital where I do clinic right now. He's getting MASSIVE doses of the most potent antibiotics on the market in the hopes it MIGHT work, but it's killing his kidneys in the process.

Here's the thing. This woman is not a microbiologist, a doctor, or a nurse. She's a psychologist. I don't find it credible that she could take a microbial swab for culture without cross contaminating it before getting it to a lab.

There's also no chain of custody. She says she swabbed these McDonalds, and may even believe it. But she can't prove it. Which is why McDonalds is laughing her off.

I would be betting that "mother" uses those paper toilet seat covers you see in some establishments. And then teaching little kid to do so.

I tended to view my previous job as being good for my eventual teaching career. Why? Because you're exposed to just about EVERYTHING.

I was wondering if it had gotten that bad yet. I do have personal experience with MRSA (my Ex got it in hospital after a surgery). the powerful chemicals (not to mention the PIC (??) line) they have to dose a person suffering an outbreak/infection is not fun. had to push many many doses into her for several weeks/months a couple of times all the while trying to keep things clean and sterile when I did so.

I am so glad that I was not corss infected in the process of bandage changes or pushing meds into her. I guess I have a healthy enough immune system

and I have heard that once you get infected with things like MRSA it is REALLY hard to get rid of it completely. plus it can flare up if say you get a nasty cold or flu or have surgery or the body become weakened in some manner.

with a lot of these little bugs getting out intp the wild, I do fear a hazmat suit world coming.

There's two kinds of MRSA patients:

Those who have it.

Those who are gonna get it.

It's out in the community now and we're seeing more and more cases of community acquired MRSA.

Usually 2 negative nasal swabs are enough to prove the person is clear of infection (or of the site where they were infected before).

There's credible evidence that the paranoia over disinfecting EVERYTHING is making us more susceptible to disease because our immune systems don't develop fully.

This. It would be a lot better for kids if more of them were allowed to play in dirty environments, rather than constantly being in scrubbed clean disinfected areas. Kids need to develop their immune systems, and while a dangerously dirty play area is a problem, it sounds to me as tho this woman is a certified germphobic who's probably imagining dirt that's not there, just cuz she ran her white glove along the floor and picked up some dust.

Lets see, I avoid the doctor hate shots and seem to be doing just fine, I only get sick 1-2 times a year and the people I know worried about germs get sick all the time. Kind of funny I was a cashier dealing with assholes and their money they coughed and sneezed on if they were more considerate than their counterparts who would just cough directly on me. Where I rarely had time to wash my hands and at a certain point you give up and just do it before using the bathroom (Sorry im not grabbing my dick till my hands are clean) or eating. And friends that were in a office environment but loved their sanitizer seems to be sick constantly. As a kid we grew up go sick and then it didn't affect us.

Look at history and all the plagues that "nearly wiped mankind out" it is population control at its finest in a world where we are getting overpopulated at alarming rates. We are also fucking up survival of the fittest, because it is usually those with the weaker immune systems getting pumped full of antibotics on a constant basis that end up breeding the mutated strains that go kill everyone.

On the other hand I dont want every place in the world to get flooded with anti bacteria chemicals, all that does is make resistant strains.

Even worse it's a double whammy because while it's making resistant strains your also preventing the kids from getting exposed to the original strain so they have no immunities to speak of to the originial strain and then they get exposed to a resistant strain can we say epidemic anyone?

There's even a theory that continuous use of hand sanitisers and bringing children up in a germ free environment is harmful in that it causes food allergies.

Interesting. Not heard that one before. That said, allergies are either being recognised more, are being created by an outside force, or assumed more often. I have to deal with people claiming them on a regular basis.

Sod it, I sell stuff that they think will help them. They give me money. I have some ethical concerns, but then again they are rewatding me sufficiently. We don't actively promote the gear as being good for them to avoid their allergies, they seek us out.

That said, there are some loons in the field who will believe anything brought forward. There are also people desperate for cures as well as conflicting surveys without number.

Gets slightly depressing after a while, actually.

Get sick. Stay home from work. No work = No money.
Or:
Kid gets sick. Have to take time off work. No work = No money.

Thats my theory anyway...
