  • Female Olympic Boxers to wear skirts!?

For the first time, female boxers will be able to compete in the 2012 Olympics ....

... though they will have to wear skirts if the Amateur International Boxing Association gets their way.

The AIBA has instituted an alternative uniform - picture here , for the women to wear because:

Yes, because men and women look so much alike when wearing shorts and a t-shirt that it's hard to distinguish them.

Also, Poland has already adopted the uniform.

Honestly, the guys' shorts these days look like skirts as it is.

But seriously, the idea that women's boxing should be "elegant" and that the way to make it so is by forcing them to wear skirts is asinine.

So they'll be easier to identify because they'll be wearing tighter clothing than the men?

Seriously though, it's not like it's going to be mixed gender matches. What's next, require women speed skaters to have flowers painted on their uniforms to "identify them?"

I definitely agree. Although this isn't the first time some of the outfits in sports are different for men and women. Tennis, hockey and figure skating all have women wearing skirts, but figure skating is judged on performance and from memory, the other two are based on heritage.

Gymnastics has different uniforms for both men and women, but their outfit matters as well depending on the event (it would matter more for rhythmic than artistic).

I can't wait to see what happens come 2016...are they going to throw up a fuss about women wearing skirts in Golf?

although I know of another event where men's and women's uniforms are different for no reason: athletics. Men seem to be able to get away with a vest and shorts (or similar), while women are pretty much clad in what amounts to a two piece. Ditto for volleyball. NO. DAMN. REASON. NEEDED.

Oh, yes, certainly, there is nothing more graceful than punching someone else in the face. >_>

Oh I don't know, I've seen one or two punches from women that were beautiful, although that may have also had something to do with the context and the recipient.

I didn't know Blue Company practiced unarmed combat.... (I kid! I kid!)

Or does Zig Zag practice stage fighting?

The boobs and vagina definitely don't give it away. Or the fact that it will say "Women's Championship Boxing" instead of "Men's Championship Boxing".

Am I the only one who thought that the guys making up the rules must be guys and are secretly hopping for a flash of a woman’s . . .(hum how to phrase this) . . . sexy parts? I don’t think this is the image they are looking for when they start talking about a woman’s elegance in skirts.

I was totally confused for a moment until I realized you meant FIELD hockey.

                          I meant at Olympic Level.

Seriously, watch the track and field events next year at London and you'll see that the girls for the most part are basically wearing what amounts to a crop top and underroos. Cathy Freeman was a bit more modest at least....(at the 2000 Olympics, she basically wore a skintight suit)

Yeah, but that wasn't for modestys sake, it was the running equivalent of one of the swimming suits.

I seem to remember a male boxer several years ago that basically wore a skirt over his trunks.

Remember this past winter Olympics the female bob-sleder whose suit split down the back??? We all discovered she was going commando.
