  • No one trusts "free" anymore?

So my wife's organization is one that supplies service dogs to disabled veterans for free (they go for donations, etc..). We have our first dog ready but we're having a hard time finding a disabled veteran for the service dog (mobility assistance).

Yes, the veteran will also need to be secure enough to be a "PR" kind of person (not all the time but since they'll be the first).

We've had NO applications despite advertising on Facebook, radio ads, TV and newspaper coverage, contacting veterans we know, contacting VA hospitals, and VFW halls.

I'm sure once we get 1 or 2 dogs placed things will pick up but I'm afraid people are thinking "It's free? What's wrong with it!".

Next time I see someone out with a therapy dog out here, I can say something if you want. Try to get a contact or something. They have some therapy dogs out here for morale. Nothing like a surprise K9 visit to raise the spirits!

Therapy dogs are great. If you want to ask around it would be greatly appreciated. The person would need to be in south Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach counties). I'll PM you a link to our Facebook page.

As a vet myself (not disabled thank God), I can understand why you would find a hard time locating a vet to take you up on the offer.

I would advise locating a local branch of the DAV, Disabled American Veterans as they specialize in assisting vets with disablities as thier name suggests.
VFW isnt bad, and Im sure there are tons of great people there but it isnt thier specialty.
Contacting a VA hospital is a fantastic way to get your paper work lost. My dad had to deal with those morons for years. Its not the people working thier, its the beaurcratic shit that goes on in any govnt agency.
