This happens more often than you would think. People are required to identify themselves to the police when asked. If they can't confirm who you are (people lie to cops all the time) then they can detain you to determine who you are.

Also, am I mistaken, or isn't there a bit in the Constitution that states that citizens of the US are not required to carry identification. I'll have to look into that further later today.

Sure they did. They were trespassing after hours. That's valid reasoning to ID someone.

Seriously, they should have let the friend go get her ID.

Amusingly this would probably actually be done to allow them to power trip not because of it.

The law about must identify yourself to the police is most often used to screw over parolees by cops who feel parole is bullshit.

But if they only ever applied it to parolees there would be inquiries but if you were just a dick to everyone either refusing to ID themselves or unable to do so then no official inquiry gets made because yeah your enforcing a dick law but your not doing it unfairly.
