Complex social issue aside, every time I see something like this I just shake my head. There's no backlash like an Internet backlash and this twit went straight up and made a video starring herself then threw it on Youtube.

Also, you think people are going to boycott Girl Scout cookies? Those things are practically laced with crack. >.>

I also think it's kind of ridiculous. Honestly, in terms of gender equality, the Boy Scouts have the Girl Scouts beat. I can, as a girl, be a member of the Boy Scouts. Officially. I can earn badges and ranks via the Venturers or as a Sea Scout, both branches of the Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts only have male members as adult leaders. There is no official route for a boy to be an official card holding member of the Girl Scouts. That's a little unequal.

They technically are in Europe. I'm hoping the Venturing groups spread a bit more and encourage the combo a bit more in the US.

You know, I think that's part of why I stopped caring about GS. Besides my troop's idea that camping meant sleeping in a condo. The overall thought that we had to be separate from the boys for...I dunno, trust reasons? was the stupidest thing ever. Heck, I worked at a Boy Scout camp for four summers running. And besides the destruction of my naivete from the god awful jokes, I never thought I was in any danger from being surrounded by boys.

Not down here they don't.

Down here they are known simply as Scouts and Guides. Not sure what the official stance is on either side regarding transgender members. What I DO know is that the Girl Guides groups mostly have female leaders, simply because down here they are known as Brown Owl and to some degree Snowy Owl.

Also down here the structure is a little different: Sea Scouts do extra activities as do the Air Scouts, however the different rankings are the same: Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers (my sister is a Rover). (for a quick clarification, the age groups are 5-8, 8-11, 11-14, 14-18, 18-25 in that order)

The Girl Guides group is a LOT less popular down here as well, they only have around 30,000 members total (18,000 youth), whereas Scouts have almost double that.

I was a Brownie, and we definitely had female troop leaders.

Also, they may let girls in the Boy Scouts, but they regularly refuse entry to kids who identify as gay, trans, atheists, etc., because they've been, in essence, bought by the Church of Latter Day Saints.

I have seen just as many troops that are Baptist and Catholic, which are just as bad when it comes to track records for discrimination in the scouting program.

^ Yes and no. It really kind of depends on your community, honestly, kind of like in the article 3 groups in Louisiana are reacting to this decision in Colorado. The council I worked for honestly didn't care how you identified, they wanted professional workers and a clean environment. So, we had two openly bisexual girls and one openly gay male at one point, plus a number of guys who identified however they felt like identifying depending on the day (mostly cuz they were trolls but that's a different story). And nobody really cared overall.

Actually I think she's still trying to come to terms with the fact that her child is transgendered. Or it could've been a slip of the tongue that the journalist capitalized on. (after so long raising your child as a boy, then discovering that he feels trapped in the wrong body, it's going to take some time to start referring to the child as "she')

Some of the comments in that article are just plain stupid, but the ones about buying Girl scout cookies by the dozen just made me . Quite a number of people actually did comment that they were going to send their share overseas to the troops.
