Yeah, I thought that was pretty stupid when I read the original article on a news site. Is there no bounds to political correctness?

Disclaimer: my high school football team, which won the local champion ship every year I was a student and went to State twice (and lost) were (and still are) the Cougars.

Better than the Clap, I guess
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

In elementary school, we were the Pirates. In middle school, we joined with a neighboring school district (who were the Rebels, I believe) and eventually we all became the Thunder. My niece & nephew's high school mascot is a Beaver, and I honestly thought that was bad enough. Oh, and bhskittykat if you think gnome was bad, I know of a school around here whose mascot is...The Midgets. Yup. Midgets. >.<

I went to the University of Mississippi. Their nickname is the Rebels. People used to go to football games with actual stars and bars Rebel flags to games, but this was done away with around 1990.

The mascot was someone called Colonel Reb, which was a cartoonish old Southern gentleman and the mascot was cute. The administration decided sometime in the 00's to do away with it, to the consternation of most of the student body, whites and blacks. After a lot of senseless debate, they settled on a Black Bear. Some are of the opinion that probably in the next 20 years that the Rebel name will be history and replaced with the Bears.

There is a school called UNLV in Las Vegas who are also called the Rebels (the Running Rebels but close enough.) Their mascot was similar to the Mississippi one, down to the floppy hat and white mustache. They should have done a fact finding mission to Las Vegas and then retooled the mascot.

The University of Missouri is joining the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this coming year. Their nickname is the Tigers. So there is going to be three Tigers in the SEC (Missouri, LSU and Auburn). Auburn should drop Tigers and be the War Eagles and/or LSU should be the Bengals. There are also two Bulldogs, Georgia and Mississippi State.

My undergrad was one who had to change due to the NCAA ruling. We were the Indians, now the Red Wolves. It still works fine, I think, although a number of stubborn alumni refuse to acknowledge the change. At one point, they considered changing it to the Ridge Runners. As in, the people who ran moonshine during Prohibition. *headdesk*

I know of a few high schools back home that have the Rebels as a mascot. I'm not sure how much longer that will last, though.

My current school's mascot is pretty damn stupid, IMO. Somehow they took the nickname for a Civil War-era militia, and turned it into a weird parrot/chicken hybrid. At least the UMKC Kangaroo (named Kasey) was cute. Jay the Jayhawk just looks....weird and mildly terrifying.

Side note: I literally can't wait until the SEC tears Mizzou apart. They have some of the worst, trashiest fans you can imagine, and they deserve no less.

Other side note: It would be markedly easier to tell people I was from Arkansas if the U of A would stop it with the "Wooo Pig Sooie!" chant.
