  • The douchebag SC and the 1% tip

    http://consumerist.com/2012/02/banke...-real-job.html

I've seen this story pop up on several different websites I frequent. Short version: Wealthy banker tips a server 1.33 or %1 on a bill of $133 and includes a note on the receipt which reads "get a real job".

It should be noted the authenticity of the image and the story has been questioned, since it looks like it could easily be a photoshop job.

Article at Huffington Post. The restaurant in question is reported to be attempting to track down the receipt, with the last update on Friday. Some reports are claiming that the VP of the restaurant confirmed that it was real, but that report is inaccurate.

I suppose it's possible it was really lousy service? Or just another rich asshole who thinks waitresses have to offer blowjobs to get 20%.

      I wish they'd realize:

      - If there were no waiters ever (because it's not a real job, so why would anyone do it?) then the restaurant business would probably go under. Can you imagine the chaos of people getting their own food at denny's at 2:30 in the morning?

      - More realistically, if there were no tips, the restaurant would have to pay the waitstaff minimum wage (most don't) and then the price on meals would go up. Then people would whine cuz meals are so expensive, wonder why the waitress is just putting out bare minimum effort.

Interesting, the comments about the signature not matching the other writing, and the implications that that shows it's a fake. Do most people sign their names exactly as if they were writing any other words? Not many I've seen... especially in a case where the "other" consists of dollar amounts (which, unlike a signature, need to be clear and legible) and a note crammed into a small space (which you'd at least *want* to be clearly legible). Whereas the more often you have to sign your name, the more likely it is to look very little like real writing at all.

I don't even sign my name the same way every time. Who are all these handwriting experts? Do they have good credentials of their handwriting analysis training? I seriously doubt it. Screw them.

            Handwriting analysis is pseudo science.

UPDATE: The restaurant has found the real receipt, which shows a total of $33.54 (not $133.54) and a reasonable tip along with no additional note.

                And... there we go.

So, I guess the blog entry was nuked when the guy noticed the receipt image had gone viral, and he was trying to do some damage control. Now he'll get to be known as the guy who did the fake receipt.

Yeah, I knew it seemed like an urban legend of sorts. My brother did the same thing to me (wrote in the part about "having a real job") as a joke when I waited on him once. He had given the cash tip to my coworker

I'm a bit surprised the restaurant bothered to get into it at all.... but good on them for putting out the truth.

Bad publicity to have workers posting this kind of stuff. Slander and all...

That's one hell of a fake job then. The fake 1s look too legitimate. Their angles match the angles of the other numbers in contrast to the angle of the picture and the the 1s written in ink have inconsistencies you'd see when writing with a pen.

I want to see the "real" receipt before I agree that this was faked.

Who's to say big bad banker dude didn't flex his muscles on the restaurant?

The added 1s are taken from another part of the receipt and then rotated slightly. The more telling bit is the fact that the written note is a slightly different shade of blue than the signature.

                            Logic.

Simply put if the guy really did create the original then he obviously didn't give a shit about what people thought of him. He wouldn't have flexed his muscle because he already demonstrated a level of arrogance proving he doesn't care if people know what he is like.

Handwriting analysis to learn anything other than "Is this written by the same person" is.

Handwriting analysis for personality and whatnot is bullshit. But people tend to form letters the same way with some regularity, so analyzing it for consistency isn't stupid.
