  • 41 year old teacher quits job, leaves wife and kids...

To move in with an 18-year-old former student

I love the "In making our choice, we've hurt a lot of people. We keep asking ourselves, 'Do we make everyone else happy or do we follow our hearts?'"

...That's not your heart you're following, dude.
    Help a friend!

This feels like an echo of what I said the other day about teachers who teach high school to hang with teens.

anyone but me seeing the red flags of abuse already?

he's isolated her from both her friends and family, texting 32x a day, since she was a freshman-the cynic in me thinks his wife may have been growing a backbone(possibly because the kids are almost grown), and he needed a new victim.

I'm thinking more mid-life crisis more likely.

          Er, what?

You read a generic, heard-it-all-before story of a middle-aged guy leaving his wife and shacking up with a younger woman - and have suspicions of abuse? Seriously?

The only thing that makes this even remotely news-worthy is the fact that he used to be her teacher.

The guy is having a mid-life crisis. He's going to feel like a complete fuckwit when the OMG-I'm-such-a-REBEL wears off the girl and she leaves him for someone else.

Her drastic behavioral shifts could point that way.

I can't imagine how rare it is for a normal 17 year old with a curfew to have behavioral shifts. But I suspect it's a teensy bit more likely than being abused. But I can also imagine a mother struggling to understand her daughter coming up with all sorts of connections that reflect her bias.

A lot of what the mother said in that report sounds like someone desperate to make him a villain, rather than the sad, pathetic codger he is.

Even though she is now of legal age to be with her former teacher, I think that the relationship itself and the events before she turned 18 were in no doubt questionable. What concerns me was how she and her (now former) teacher texted each other back and forth and if those texts were at all explicit. We're talking about the possibility of statutory rape, sexting a minor and an illicit relationship between a student and teacher during the time the student was a minor.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people...

Had a friend in high school that did precisely this ( The guy was around 36-37 as I recall ) and she did it *entirely* because she was pissed at her mom and wanted to get back at her. Had nothing to do with the guy and she dropped his ass like a sack of potatos after a few months.

He'll get a slap of reality when his little gumdrop drops him for someone her own age. We can just hope his wife isn't dumb enough to take him back.

Perhaps it's giving too many older men hope that they'll get their own Courtney Stodden and live happily and overtly-sexually ever after.

Yes, that'll hold together well when she's hitting her sexual prime and you're hitting Depends. -.-

That's not working out long term unless you have a six figure bank account.

I had a professor in college whose wife had initially been his student, and that was how they met. Sometimes students like to make wisecracks about that. However, to his credit, she was a non-traditional student and was older than your typical college student. Though even if she had been of typical college student age, there would have been nothing illegal about it, though it may have been a little squeamish to think about.

When I was in twelfth grade, a girl in my class was dating a guy who was 27. She even brought him to the senior prom. I have to wonder how he felt being 27 years-old and being at a high school dance with a bunch of 17 and 18 year-olds. Thing is, they ended up getting married after graduation, and they had a kid together, too. I've left town since then, so I don't know if they're still together or not.

In the second situation, I had to wonder how it went over with the parents when she first brought him home. I have a younger sister, and I can't imagine how my parents would have reacted if, when she was in high school, she brought home a 27 year-old man and said, "Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend." I'm picturing the roof coming off the house.
